Thanx again,

The vertical output is a ic . If youre handy at soldering you may be able to repair it yourself. If youre not comfortable soldering close solder connections, it may be best to have a professional do the repair.

vertical output ICs are usually 5 to 7 pin standup ICs that are attached to Heatsinks.Usually they have a TDAnumber stamped on them. If you can post the model number of your set I can help you better in locating it.

sounds like the vertical output is causing the CRTs to shutdown for protection. Try resoldering the vertical output IC that will often correct the problem. If not the vertical output IC may be defective.

try resoldering the vertical output IC. sounds like the cRTs are blanking due to the vertical. If that doesnt help you may need a new IC. While youre there look for signs of the CRt leaking as often it leaks right onto the vertical output section real close to the IC.

no sounds like either the vertical output IC needs resoldering or maybe defective. vertical IC will make the tubes shutdown for safety while audio and Crt heaters will remain on. Try resoldering the IC if that doesnt help replace the vertical output IC its an inexpensive part. If you need more assistance please let me know

Followup question on the advice to pass on the $100 tv.

no its a DLP they are having some troubles with the dlps losing signal due to the digital board. verticle ICs only effect CRT projections by making the CRTs shutdown . Dlps are all controlled by the digital board. They are very expensive when you can find them. They are usually over 800 and need to be special orderd. I would pass on the TV. You can buy one cheaper than fix that

Television has no picture

That TV uses the PTK195 chassis, and the fact that you see only a thin line for each color near the bottom of the screen tells me your vertical output IC has stopped working, and is putting a small DC voltage across the yokes. I have seen this caused by a defective vertical output IC and I have also seen vertical problems caused by a small CRT coolant leak which drips onto the main board near the vertical output IC. If you do not have experience servicing the PTK195 chassis than have a qualified tech handle it for you.
