without using the fn key .... hit the number lock key once if you are having that issue.... if that does not work tap the number key while holding the fn key down. just once then let go of the keys. having the number lock causes that issue. you may also note that number lock key is something other then white... the colour will correspond with the key you need to hit with the number lock key at the same time to change it.

Other then that it may be a stuck key.

I just had the same problem. i have a laptop too. all i had to do was hit Fn and the scroll key at the same time and it fixed the issue!

Disable fn key

Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS setup (F1, F2, F10 keys are common) and look for an option to 'use fn keys without fn button' or something like that.

My keyboard types numbers for several keys unless i hold down the function key. how do i turn off this feature/

Sounds like Num lock has been turned.

Looks for num lock on the keyboard and press it.

You may have to press FN & Numlock.

This will resolve the issue.

My Dell laptop keyboard settings have apparently been changed-I have to hold down the Fn key to get the letters on the keyboard instead of the Fn items indicated on the keyboard. How do I fix it?

Maybe this is the result of inadvertently turning on "Sticky keys" (see the Accessibility Control Panel Help file). Try holding the Fn key down for several seconds with no other key pressed to see if that turns off the Fn lock-on. After that you can disable the Sticky Keys function in Accessibility.

Keyboard keys that have purple numbers are locked. Can't type.

Your "Num Lock" is on.
Look for the num lock key (it's similar to the "caps lock" key in function)
If the "num lock" is blue, you may have to hold a blue "fn" key when you press num lock

There's is probably a light at the top of the keyboard that'll tell you when num lock is on.

Dell Laptop - Keyboard "Fn" is causing problems!

I think it is not the Fn key but the NumLock that is activated. Look for the key labeled NumLk , this is the number lock. Also check if the light on the notbook with a number (usually number 1) is on. If it is on, yo must deactivate the numlock by pressing it again. It works in toggle mode. Sometimes the numlock is activated together with the shift key, sometimes with the function key.
