    i had vista replaced with xp by a shop and it did the one time then gone thing.
    well, when i ran through the solution ending at the list above, I finally just closed it after waiting for an answer. I tried several sities trying to find the if one of the above list was the filters just not called u or l filters. no success.
    then a few days later i checked the my comp. and there it was and has remained since, as of a few minutes ago.
    It would help a lot if that type of picture or list were posted with the plan of attack as a before and after fix example.

Ensure that you also look in the "Class" Sub keys of controlset001, 002 and any others listed. You will need to uninstall any burner software before performing the manual registry edit.

Dear Sir/Madam my laptop cd rom is not working please find the message below Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged....

Since it has something to do with the registry, you have 2 options to fix it. There are lots of forums that shows steps on how to edit the registry (make sure to back up registry files before editing it, mistakes on registry editing can cause further damage to the operating system). However, I do not suggest this to non-advanced users. If you are not comfortable with editing the registry, I recommend to just reinstall the operating system.

Hope this helps.

We cant play cd dvd in our laptop

Hi surumiyasaia,

I see that you are experiencing issues with your DVD-rom not reading any cd's and dvd's.

I will be more than glad to give you details on how we can fix your concern, please see below step by step procedures for the fix.

  • On your desktop screen please click on Start then on then on the start search bar type REGEDIT lower case will work as well, a list will appear on the left side of the screen you will see regedit highlighted then press enter to open the application.
  • Once you have the Registry Editor window up on the screen you will need to follow this string to get to the DVD's registry - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  • In the Registry Editor Click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
  • then click on SYSTEM
  • then click on CurrentControlSet
  • then click on Control
  • then click on Class
  • then click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  • this will show the information about the DVD on the right side of the screen
  • Look for Upper Filters and Lower Filters
  • Right click on Upper filters and left click on delete, once prompted are you sure you want to deleted upper filters click yes.
  • do the same for lower filters delete it as well.
  • then close Registry Editor restart the computer and try your DVD-Rom again if it will start detecting cd's and Dvd's
if still the issue is still the same try reformatting windows back to factory defaults, if the issue is still the same most likely your DVD-Rom may need replacing.

I hope this information will be helpful.

Have a nice day thanks.

Deleted Sonic DLA because of crashes and now computer won't recognize unformatted disc in drive

Go to the registry and delete the lower and "upperfilters"for the CD/DVD drive option. you can access it by going to this option. REGEDIT >> HKEY Local Machine >> System >> CurrentControlSet >> Control >> Class >> Select for the option which is the first {4D36.....}. After deleting the upper/lowerfilters, close the Registry Editor and restart the laptop. Then there try inserting a blank disc or any disc. Thank you.

I recently lost my CD/DVD drive when I (correctly) uninstalled a Roxio application from my Toshiba laptop. After a week of frustration, I finally found the fix. My CD/DVD drive is back!

Go to the Windows START menu.
Click on RUN and enter: regedit

Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class

In the CLASS folder, look for:
Key Name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters] You will see the upper and lower filters folders once you get to the end of the tree… *\*\*\control\class
If a backup folder for either the upper or lower filter folders shows up, clear all the data from these folders as well.

Note: Do not delete the Key or the Multi-String Values. Delete only the data values.
Exit Registry and Reboot

edit the registry and delete the upper and lower filter.

In Registry Editor, expand the following registry path:

Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.

Right click the upper filter and delete it. Look for lower filter and delete it also. (if only one is available then its fine).

close registry editor and restart the computer.

try your dvd drive again.

***Note*** make sure to follow the instructions properly. do not delete any file, just the lower and upper filter or else system will not load to windows anymore.
