99% of the time it's the belt.

Pull the top off the dryer. Typically a couple of screws in the back and then slide the whole top towards the front of the dryer, an lifting from the front edge open it up like a chest. Check out the drum. You should see a broken belt or no belt.

Drive Motor

The dryer drive motor turns the drum and the blower wheel to exhaust the air. If the dryer stops the motor might be defective. If the dryer stops and the dryer motor makes a humming noise there might be something caught in the blower wheel, or the drum might be binding. Try removing the belt from the motor and checking the blower wheel for obstructions. Also try rotating the drum by hand with the belt off, it should rotate freely. If the drum doesn't turn freely, determine what is causing it to bind. The dryer motor can't be tested easily. If the drum turns freely and the blower wheel is clear, and yet the dryer still keeps stopping mid-cycle the motor may be defective. it will need to be replaced. It is not serviceable.

Drum Roller Axle

This dryer has drum support rollers. There will always be two supporting the rear of the drum, and on some models there may be two supporting the front of the drum. The rollers must spin freely to work properly. If the roller axles are worn out the rollers may not spin freely which can overload the motor and the dryer stops. If the dryer stops mid-cycle, remove the belt and spin the drum, it should spin freely. If not, check the rollers and roller shafts.

Drum Roller

This dryer has drum support rollers. There will always be two supporting the rear of the drum, and on some models there may be two supporting the front of the drum. The rollers must spin freely to work properly. If they are worn out or start binding the motor can get overloaded and the dryer stops. If the dryer stops mid-cycle, check to be sure the drum turns freely with the belt removed. If not, check the rollers. Do not lubricate the rollers or roller shaft, lubrication will attract lint and cause the roller bearings to wear out faster. If the rollers don't turn freely, replace them. The roller shaft can often be reused, unless it has worn down. Clean the shaft thoroughly before installing the new rollers.

Drum Slide, Glide, or Pad

The front of the dryer drum is supported by small pieces of plastic-like material. As the drum rotates, it slides on these plastic pieces. If the dryer stops mid-cycle, it may be that one or more of these plastic slides or glides has worn out. When they wear out the drum can start binding and put strain on the motor. The motor then shuts down and the dryer stops. Check the glides for wear and replace as needed.

Drum Bearing

The drum bearing supports the rear of the dryer drum. Over time this bearing will wear out and may cause several different problems. If the dryer stops during the cycle it may be that this drum bearing has worn out and is putting too much strain on the motor. If the belt is removed and the drum spins freely, the drum bearing is probably not worn out. If the drum bearing is worn out, there may be some grinding or squealing, and the drum will be hard to turn.

Dryness Control Board

The dryness control board shuts off the dryer when the clothes have reached the level of dryness selected by the user. If the dryer stops too early, the dryness control board might be defective. This is not very common and other possibilities should be checked first.

Ld lg3788w gas dryer drum won't turn

not a good model number, most likely you have a broken belt as long as it starts, heats but the drum doesn't spin,if you get a buzzing sound and it doesn't start you could have something stuck in the blower wheel, the motor is jammed or the motor is bad,you can open the door, push the door switch in,spin the drum with your other hand and have someone push the start button,if it starts you have a bad motor.

My kenmore electric dryer turns on and heats but the drum doesn't turn?

that would be a broken belt, or the motor, I say belt. You will need to open the top of the dryer and look in the middle of the drum for a belt, which is not there I am sure, here are some websites,Tim:

Ok check the belt. if broken then make sure the drum turns freel by hand before replacing the bely. Usually dryers wont heat if the motor doesnt go so perhaps the motor is running without a belt. have a look see. Without an inspection its dificult to pin point Good luck

Dryer won`t turn on but is plugged in to power source

  • Check that the dryer is plugged in properly and has power. Check the socket with an appliance that is working, such as a fan. If there is no electricity coming from the socket, check your house's fuse box and flip it to on if it has been tripped to off.
Check the dryer door switch to make sure it it working properly. A malfunctioning door switch is a common cause of a dryer drum not rotating. To check the door switch, you will most likely have to remove two screws from under the lint trap and pull it up to remove a portion of the dryer. Remove the wires from the door switch with the dryer unplugged. Using an ohmmeter, check to make sure you have continuity between the two wires. If there isn't, you will need to replace the door switch.
  • Thermal Fuse
  • Check the thermal fuse if the drum of your dryer is not turning. The thermal fuse will automatically shut off the dryer if the heat inside is too high, but when it malfunctions, it causes the dryer to stop working completely. Before checking the thermal fuse, check to ensure that the vent of the dryer is not clogged, which could cause the dryer to overheat and keep the drum from moving. To gain access to the thermal fuse on most dryer models, you will need to remove the back panel of your dryer. Look at your dryer's manual to find the location of the thermal fuse and replace it with a new one.
  • Motor and Belt Check the belt of your dryer if the motor is running but the drum does not move. The belt controls the movement of the drum from the power of the motor. The belt will either be located under the drum of the dryer, or in the back depending on the model. Find the location of the belt and, if it is broken, replace it with a new belt.
  • If the dryer drum is rotating then stops after about 30 seconds the motor is probably faulty and needs to be replaced. Before replacing the motor, check the fan blade of the dryer to make sure it is not blocked. This can cause the motor to cut out.
  • Sometimes the wiring connection from your home can burn and sever the connection with the dryer's power cord. If so, you will need to replace the power cord and the terminal block that attaches it to the dryer to give it power. This is one of the more expensive fixes, so check everything else before narrowing the problem down to the wiring.

My dryer heatsp but the drum wont spin.

    Hi,
If you are getting heat but the drum won't turn then the problem is usually with the motor or the belt. If the motor is running but the belt is off or broken then you should hear a faint hum of the motor running and the motor coasting to a stop when you shut it down...
If the belt is off and not broken then check the guides and wheels to make sure that one of them has not come out of alignment or broken throwing the belt off...

    Dryer heat but what turn

Hello Friend, Replacing a dryer belt is very simple. Just remove front of dryer cabinet. unplug wires from dryer door switch. Just slide a new belt over the drum with the belt grooves facing to the inside. Underneath drum you will see a tention wheel next to motor. Install belt around tention wheel and around motor shaft pully. Re-install front dryer cabinet. Make sure to plug in the wires to the door switch and make sure that the drum is re-inserted back over the felt glide on inner cabinet front. Happy to help, Tim.

The drum on my dryer stopped turning it was heating and it just stopped turning, I just want to get instuctions on how to take it apart.

If your dryer doesn't tumble, check these:

    Belt
    Motor
    Door switch
Belt Dryers have a drive belt that turns the clothes drum. If the belt breaks, the drum stops rotating. Then you need to replace the belt, and often the idler pulley, because the pulley tends to wear out at the same time.

Click here for a belt installation diagram.

Motor If the dryer motor only hums when you press the Start button, the motor may be burned out. Here's how to test the dryer motor:

    • Remove the belt.

    • Check for obstructions in the blower fan housing.

    • Manually rotate the shaft of the motor.

If the motor is very stiff, or impossible to rotate manually, and the blower fan housing is clear, you need to replace the motor.

If the motor rotates freely, run the motor momentarily with the belt removed and the blower in place. If the motor runs fine with the belt removed, there may be a problem with the idler pulley or the clothes drum. Try to rotate the drum by hand. If it is very difficult to move, correct any problem with the rollers or pulley, and then reassemble the dryer and try it again.

If the motor hums but doesn't rotate on its own even with the belt removed--yet you can turn it freely by hand--you usually need to replace the motor or the motor start capacitor.

Door switch Your dryer can't operate at all if the door switch is defective. It's inside the dryer main housing near the door frame. Sometimes you need to raise or open the top or front of the dryer to reach the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.
