Unfortunetly the HDD's can't be swapped like that. The only way to get the old stuff is to some how get the 40gb working so you can back up your system. Tell me what happend to the 40 and I might be able to help you get it up long enough to back it up so you can get all your stuff transfered. Another way is if you can get the 40gb machine to work the PS3 has a mode to hook a CAT5 cable from the new to the old and transfer that way.

A little more on the HDD swap. The HDD's are machine spacific and can only be recognized by the machine they were in and any other PS3 you try to put them in won't recognize the device without a format will saddly enough wipe the drive clean.

Let me know what's wrong with the 40 and I will see if I can help getting it back up so you can get your saved stuff off of it.

What HDD does my Dell 500sc require. Current drive has died

Assuming your dell is the same as this one reviewed by PC magazine in 2001 it needs an IDE (a.k.a. "PATA") drive. It's old enough it may not recognize larger drives. You may have have to track down a 40 or possibly 80 gig IDE drive some where (eBay maybe?). In my experience people don't want them so you can probably get them rather cheap.

Hi there. it sounds like the blue ray drive has failed on your ps3.I take it that sony repaired your old one or sent out a reconditioned unit? If it is still under warranty get them to replace it again and insist on a 12 month warranty. i am on my 3rd unit now and because its a 40 gig model which they dont make anymore i am having to do with yet another reconditioned unit. hope this helps.

PS3 200gig HDD upgrade

ive been doing some home work on it since last night and it seems the best one is a seagate version, either 5600 rpm or the 7200 rpm works, but it cant be larger than the 200gb for the size of it fitting, the best price i could find was about 40-50 pound or 80-100 dollars, just google it and it should come up. The only thing is i would say it would void your warranty when fitting it as its not a standard fitment, so i'm waiting till mines ran out to do it.

PS3

As far as i know if it is a 20 or 60 gig it is just playstation 20 or 60 gigabites. I have heard that the 40 and 80 gig models have been refered to as 2.0. So it would be playststion 3  80 2.0
