Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

My heating system is a Heat Line Compact gas boiler. When i turn on the boiler to heat the rads the pressure guage goes up to 5 and water comes out of the overflow pipe. Can you tell me what the problem might be? Thank you, Damien.

Yes, your pressure is too high or your expansion tank is bad or the relief valve is bad. The water is expanding when heated and no place to expand too. I suspect the expansion tank. If you can get to it, tap it with a tip of a screw driver. It should sound hollow.

This boiler, from memory, has an electric diverter valve.
If the system has dirty (sludge/scale laden) water then the diverter valve may not return under spring pressure, and therefore not divert all of the hot boiler water to the hot water heat exchanger, leaving some going to the rads.
If I am right then the rads will not get fully hot.
If the valve has failed completely, or electrically, then the rads will get fully hot and there will be no hot water output (hot water will be cold).

Hi.
No the water does not have to run through all of them....if you have what is known as a mono-flo system.
With this type of system there are tees that divert some of the water to the radiator and some of the water bypasses and goes on to the nest radiator and so on....

If you look on the radiators that are not getting warm or any of the rads for that matter you will see a silver bleeder valve. Some of these take a "key" to open and some just have a screw driver slot.
If you open the beleeder you will probably get air out of the radiator. Leave the bleeder open till the valve spurts water out, then close it.
Continue this until all the rads are full of water.
If no air or water comes then your "fill Valve" on the boiler may be faulty and not allowing water into your system. You may need to replace that and then bleed the rads.....
Bottom line.... air does no heating, the rads must be full of water to make heat. Air in the rads also air locks that loop in a mono flo system...thus no heat...
Sometimes even after bleeding it can take sometime for the water to start flowing through a rad again... be patient...

I hope that this will help you to solve your problem!

Thanks for using Fixya!!

Heating pressure gauge goes up

yes tami
there should be a pressure rellief valve fitted.
it also sounds like the heat exchanger is blocked if the hot water is not as good as it used to be and the boiler reaches temperature too quickly then there is scale in the heat exchanger and needs to be cleaned or replaced

RAds don't get hot anymore

rads not heating could be down to old system ie pipework etc and sludge building up. r there any cold spots on rads? when boiler turning off do u mean going to reset? if so could be over heat prob at boiler . there should be a pressure pipe coming from boiler going to outside if its a combi. if this is leaking your expansion vessel might need re charged as this is where the water will be going.

Very Hot water coming out of overflow pipe

Is your boiler heating your domestic hot water if so i would turn water off to water maker and see if your boiler pressure stays down below 20 psi. If so water maker is bad. The other thing that could cause this problem would be the boiler pump is out.

Ariston combi boiler

sounds like your diverter valve is passing on the boiler, this diverts the heat either to the rads or to the taps, if its passing through the heating chanel it'll heat up the rads- may also be a scaled up secondary heat exchanger, hope this helps you
