Hi, I have an old Toshiba ExpressWriter 440 and need the part that mounts directly in front of the dot matrix print head. The ribbon runs through it and it also holds the paper down on the roller. Don't know what it is called. Do you have one and what is the price?

Hello
This condition of Dot Matrix printer only due to
1. Bad ribbon cartridge (25%)
2. faulty print head (75%)
First replace your ribbon cartridge and try printing, if not OK then you have to replace the print head.
Good Luck
Okidata Dot Matrix Printers
So, the one thing that no one ever pointed out is that Okidata printer head jewels get lubricated VIA the ribbon. You MUST use at least 50 to 70% Brand name original cartridges, or suffer premature print head wear.
Once the printed character becomes blurry, get a REMANUFACTURED head, with the oiling wick. This lets you use all the cheap ribbons, by lubricating the jewels directly.
When you are all finished, enter the menu of the printer and play with REGISTRATION. Often you can make a crisper print by tweaking this setting.
The print quality of dat matrix printers depends upon the printer ribbon. If the ribbon is old or worn out then the print will be very light. In this case replace the ribbon.
Dot matrix printers are very old technology and I suggest you get a Inkjet printer or a laser printer.
Dot matrix printers cannot match the print quality of Inkjet and laser printers.
the print head has a series of pins that shoot back and forth striking the ribbon and placing a dot on the page, a series of dots create a letter etc. one pin is not working correctly. it could be the head but try re-instal drivers to eliminate that as a cause. if the line persists then i'm afraid it may well be the head to be replaced. good luck
Either your ink ribbon is worn out or it is broken, or it is put in wrong, or your print head isn't working. Pull the print head the whole way toward the paper (With the adjustment lever) and run a test sheet. Look at it closely. If you see imprints, it's the ribbon. Id you don't, it's the print head.
Based on your description, the printer is working, it is not a form issue, the printer head is good, an adjustment might be needed and it works, there is no reason to replace the Lexmark 2381plus printer even if it is 7 years old (not unless you would want to).
To the faint printing on the last of the 3 pages:
the take-up spool/wheel drawing the ribbon is not working (most likely). The ribbon is not moving hence the printer head is not striking fresh ribbon area. Check the ribbon cartridge, it may be stuck or the driving spindle where the ribbon's take-up spool/wheel locks into. It may need a bit of cleaning and/or lubrication;
the printer head is slightly adjusted away from the paper. Normally, there is a mechanical lever/adjustment that sets how many paper & duplicates are fed. Adjust for 1 only.

1) The ribbon cartrige it warn out or damaged, leading to no ink in a particular area.
More likely
2) The print head is damaged or warn out or is not connected correctly to the pritner. The print head may need to be reseated or if this does not fix the problem the print head may need to be replaced.
Chances are, you didn't installed the ribbon correctly...
A. Open the printer cover B. Use a pin to guide the ribbon between the print head and the ribbon guide, then turn the ribbon tightening knob to help feed the ribbon into place, it shouldn't be twisted or creased. C. Slide the print head from side to side to make sure it moves smoothly
