I have an HP scanner that i have hooked up to my Windows XP computer, through the USB port that will not scan. Every time i try to scan a document, i get an error message. I have Word documents that i need to scan and edit, before printing.

Ok - the reason this error pops up is because there is a software issue going on. If the software is correctly installed you will see options for where the scan will go in the computer.
Having said that there are several things that can cause a problem between the printer and the software;
1) You are connecting the printer by USB to router - you may print but will never be able to scan as this is not a networkable printer. Connect it directly to your computer and recomplete the setup portion to configure the scanner.
2) You have not finished the setup. At the end of the installer you can setup the scanner but if you skipped this step you will have to redo it in order for it to connect. Click on the device manager in your dock and then next to information and settings there will be a little wheel. Click on the wheel and go to setup assistant. Complete the assistant and try to scan.
3) The printer is not grabbing the new software options - leave the printer turned on but unplug the power cord and wait for 30 seconds. Plug printer back in - when you do this it should initialize and will look to the mac for changes and the options should load.
4) Software missing - You MUST have the software for the printer installed for scanning function. Adobe and other programs cannot replace it - it has to be installed.
5) Software is corrupted. Uninstall the software (uninstaller is under applications in the HP folder) and then download and install the most recent full feature software and drivers for your operating system.
6) If all these steps fail you may have an issue with your computer and it's TWAIN drivers.

Which driver set did you install? Did you install the HP basic drivers, the full software or the Windows XP built-in driver? The Windows OS driver usually only is the printer driver.
If you connected the USB cable before installing the HP software, you will get the OS drivers. Disconnect the USB cable and then uninstall the printer driver. (Start > Control Panel > Printers and Devices. Then right click on the printer and select Remove Device.)
Install the HP software. If you want to launch a scan from the all-in-one's front panel button, install the full software.
Next open the scan software on your computer. (This is the HP Solutions Center for most models if you use the full software.) Attempt to launch a scan from the software. Adjust the resolution and other settings as needed. Then use those settings to adjust the destinations for the front panel buttons in the software. (Settings > Scan Settings > Button Settings)
If this doesn't work, try a different USB cable, a different USB port on your computer and a direct connection (if you are using a USB hub). Scanners require bi-directional communication with the computer and may fail when the printer works due to a minor cable issue. If you have the printer connected to a router or similar device to turn it into a network printer, again the scanner will not work. Again the direct connection to the computer is needed.
If you are still having trouble, can you use the all-in-one's copy function? If not, do you have any error messages? If the scanner mechanism isn't moving, the unit probably needs service. (This model doesn't have a scanner lock to protect the mechanism in transit.)
Does the same error occur if you launch a scan from the computer? What OS do you have? Vista only has a basic driver available and does not support the scanner buttons. (You can launch the scans from a number of options: third-party software, Windows Fax and Scan (new scan), Microsoft Paint (File > Import from Scanner or Camera > New Scan) and Windows Photo Gallery.)
If the error occurs when you launch the scan from the computer, try a new data cable and different USB ports. Try a direct USB connection if you use a hub. Then check your USB ports and the drivers for the USB. (For Windows, look in the Device Manager. Start > Control Panel > System > Device Manager (exact directions will depend on the OS).
The HP Photo and Imaging software requires you to set the default scan destinations in the software before you can use the buttons on the scanner (for those OS/driver versions that support the feature). Always open the software and scan from the computer to see what the defaults will be. Each version of HP's imaging software set up these buttons differently; the help option is useful. Try Scan > Scan settings to find where to set the color and black & white destinations.

Try uninstalling the drivers for the scanner and the printer. Restart the computer without either the scanner or printer pluged in. After restart install the drivers and only plug up the USB cable for each device when asked by the software.
your scanner is ok. But there is communication problem from computer to scanner . For that Check your usb cxable and usb port of computer working fine. Try in another usb port. If you have other port like parallel port then check it. Check drivers of scanner are instaled proeprly. Ig already installed then uninstall it and install again. Also uninstall all usb drivers then restart the computer then it automatic install usb drivers . you can uninstall usb drivers from computer with device manager. Press windows key + Pause break key to see system proeprty then go to hardware then you see device manager then uninstall all usb drivers.
Download the file above > unplug your scanner > install the file above > reboot your computer (if needed) > login into your account > plug the scanner into your usb port > it should automatically detect your scanner > goto device manager > imaging device > right click HP Scan Jet .... > Click on Driver Tab > Click on Roll Back Driver > choose to run the driver on windows xp compatibility mode.
