Drive D may not be formatted. Or it could be configured only for the C drive and no partition was made.

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

How did you install Ubuntu? Using a Live CD I presume. If you were able to boot from the CD-Rom and run the Linux installation either as a demo or a physical installation then the CD-Rom drive is working. It should be able to boot from a Windows recovery CD and run the Windows installation program. There is no problem with the drivers because Ubuntu has its own drivers. Maybe the firmware of the Drive, but I doubt it. Since your hard drive is brand new (scrubbed) you have nothing to lose by physically installing Ubuntu and playing with it to verify the hardware and possibly to update the firmware of the CD-Rom drive. When choosing the Ubuntu distribution do not use one with a version number higher than 12.04 LTS. I could not install version 12.10 on an old tablet PC for some hardware reason: The Ubuntu part was not working but KDE was fine.
When installing Ubuntu install grub on the C: drive. It will be wiped anyway when you reinstall Windows.
Good Luck.

Transferring to an XP laptop

Connect both computers to a router, add them both to the same workgroup, share the hard drive on the Toshiba, use Windows Explorer on the Dell to search for and copy any files you want.

Dropped toshiba hard drive no longer recognised by laptop

That clicking/knocking or squeal is the read/write heads touching the platters inside the hard drive. They should hover over them. Play TAPS!!!! Once those heads crash into the platters inside....its gone! Some companies charge big money ($100+/HR) to remove data from crashed hard drives. Take it outside and smash it with a sledge hammer.....at least no one will be able to get your data. Here is a company that does this type of work....good explanation here

Brand new laptop, cannot read d drive

Hello alisha22,

Is your new laptop an hp, by chance? I'm not too sure about other brands offhand, but I know that with hp, they specially reserve a part of your hard drive for factory restoration. It's typically the D: Drive, and it will be identified as HP_Recovery on the 'My Computer" screen, and is usually around 10GB. The only thing it means for you is that if your computer ever goes crazy to the point that you wanted to start from scratch, you can go through a special process at startup, and have everything set to factory like the first day you got your machine.

You can't access this drive partition, and it's best to just leave it alone. It may come in handy someday.

I have a brand new Toshiba equium laptop and it does not recognize the battery. any idea?

Most likely your looking at a bad Battery. You can try flashing your BIOS first to see if that makes a difference, but most likely you will need to buy another battery

there is a registry tweek to remove an upper and lower bound reg keys ok the drive which will allow it to work. my drive did not work out of the box but after removing two registry keys it works fine! search google to find the satellite registry hack to fix the cd rom drive. again it involves deleting an upper and lower bound key in the registry. good luck!
