Thanks Josh. Just to clarify, the hard drive came with a usb cable and instructions say to just plug it in to a usb port. Are you telling me I should be plugging it into a FireWire port for which I will have to buy another cable??

Make sure your Mac meets these minimum criteria or it won't work.

  • Any Macintosh with built-in FireWire port or a Power Macintosh G3 with a powered PCI 6-pin FireWire adapter
  • Mac OS 8.6 to 9.x; Mac OS X 10.1 or higher

Yes, you need to plug it in the firewire port. If the cable doesn't fit then you need to get one that does.

The reason they did not send a firewire cable was because there are many different types, and if they even did send one there's no gaurantee it will be the right one.

With the usb at least they are at least the same on the computer so companies can send a cable that fits the pc and their device.

Maxtor one touch mini 120gb drive won't show on my imac.

if the drive has been formatted in NTFS then the mac will not pic the drive up, you have to format the drive in FAT or FAT32 for OSX to pick it up and use it. See if this helps, if not the drive may be faulty

Reformat seagate 120gb portable harddisk - freeagent

Hi johnsil,

If the drive shows up in MY COMPUTER then the easy way to format the drive is right-clicking on it then choosing FORMAT. This will erase everything in the drive, so make sure to back up everything in the drive before formatting it.

Now if the drive doesn't show up in MY COMPUTER you may have to goto the Control Panel click on Administrative Tools then select Computer Management then click on the category of "STORAGE", you should see there Disk Management. Carefully look there for your Seagate 120GB Freeagent drive, right-click then choose format, and that should format the drive.

Hope this helps!

Peace! :)

Verbatim 250GB External Hard Disk not recognized by PC

Almost always, when a USB drive doesn't assign a drive letter in MY Computer the issue is a Mapped network drive using the drive letter the USB drive is attempting to use.

With the drive connected, open DISK MANAGEMENT find the USB Drive, right click it and assign it an available drive letter.
