You have a closed caption type tv. Search your tv menu (maybe via the remote control) and look for an entry called closed caption, I'm guessing it is set to TEXT. either set it to OFF, or set it to ON if you want to.

MINTEK TV - Black screen in the center of the picture

This is the closed captioning text box. Search the menus to turn off closed captioning. The reason for its seemingly random appearance is that not all channels nor all programs provide this service.

Screen has black box with greek letters on channel

If you put the TV on CH 3 and use a VCR (if available) to change channels you'll know if it's the TV or cable channel (sound like the channel)

Black box when tv is on and going through channels

This worked on my tv...give it a try:

go into your menu and find closed caption, someone has accidently set the closed caption mode to text, when the on screen display of channel or volume goes away the box appears. turn off the closed caption feature or switch it to something other than "text" mode, and your box will go away.

Try and turn off the closed captioning. I had the same problem and it turned out that the closed captioning was on t1 instead of OFF. Hope this helps!!!!

Big black box in the middle of the screen

The black box is there because your closed captioning is on and set to text mode. Some channels send the signal even when there is no actual text to display. You can get rid of it by either turning off closed captioning or changing it to CC1 or CC2 mode instead of text. If you can't find those settings, then restore factory settings as directed in your user manual.

Sanyo

Go into the setup menu and turn off closed captioning. The black box is a text box for CC. Some stations are sending the signal which triggers the box, but are not actually sending any text.
