Inoperative fax and telephone line

I have a 2 line telephone, a Canon L80 fax machine and a 2 line answering machine, All were hooked up and working optimally --- with telephone line 1 Optimum Voice (internet) and line 2 Verizon (standard analog carrier).

I just changed line 2 to Optimum Voice and with the same *hookup, I get no dial tone on line 2 and cannot send or receive faxes, Bypassing the fax machine, I get a dial tone on line 2 - but of course have lost use of the fax machine. Any solution? Si Kreindler sibearzy@optimum.net

Kevin's solution is simplistic connect line to telephone and all is OK if there is a dial tone. I have done that as part of testing both tel lines 1 $ 2. They work but - sorry, Kevin's response does absolutely nothing to solve my problem. Gentlemen, I need help. Tks

Sammy Expert - thanks for the tip but answering machine is totally empty of messages. There has to be a more technical reason. Thanks.

Check for the phone line, see if you have a dial tone,if no dial tone, call your service provider. Make sure the phone line that is connected to your fax plugged into the slot marked by the "L" on your fax machine. if not make the correction. If so then plug in your phone into your fax machine labeled with a picture of a phone and see if you get a dial tone and be able to fax.

Hope it may help you;

HI, I have a VOIP internet phone and a Standard. My fax machine was having
a problem with faxing in general. But I had to go into the settings on my Fax
and change the page output rate(bps) By default the Fax Machine is set to
the Highest speed 26000 bps or even higher. I changed mine to 12000 bps.
My dial tone was there but when I switch to the VOIP that is when I started to
    have all these problems.

    • Check to make sure that You have the VOIP going into the correct Jack on the Fax Machine.

    • If You still have no dial Tone

    • See if your VOIP phone settings has a option to for output (Phone/PC Speakers/)

    • Still no dial tone

    • Switch back to the LAN line and see if you are getting the Dial Tone

    • If no Dial tone is present then the setting on the Fax Machine are causing the problem

    • I would do a Factory Default Rest on all the settings. Make sure that you write down
    any phone numbers/contacts etc.

    • If there is a Dial Tone with the LAN Line then You have to change the settings on the VOIP service etc.

I sure hope this helps you
you may rate my solution if you found this helpful
    Thank You

Make sure that the telephone line from the wall is plugged into "LINE" and not "PHONE" on the fax machine. You might also call the fax number from a different phone to see if you can hear the fax tones.

Are there any other phones that use that line? If you have a phone attached to the fax machine, is the reciever in the holster all the way?

If it is a dedicated fax line it is probabaly best set to fax only mode. Fewer rings (No more than two) FaxTel mode will ring for longer to allow you to pick it up if its a phone call.

Check if the machine has dial tone by onhook button or handset to check. If you have none try testing with another phone to rule out the machine.

Try a manual reception. Pick up the phone when it rings and press the start button.

Hooking up a fax machine on home telephone line

Well... the problem is that you are running two machines on one line. ONE of them has to take predominance. Both machines should have settings for "number of rings to answer at". It sounds like you currently have the fax set to less than the answering machine, so the fax picks up after two rings, while your answering machine might be set to more, which it never gets to, because the fax answered the call already(It doesn't matter if you answer the phone, or the fax picks up, once the line is open, the answering machine is taken out of the equation). Even if you set the answering machine to answer first, you're then taking the fax service out of the loop. I'm not sure how you're going to juggle that, since both types of machines each need control over the line to work properly. That's why we (business machine folk) always recommend a dedicated line for fax service.
