Question about Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

No sound My daughter had a computer guy update her computer after a virus problem and now there is no sound. She uses Windows XP on a Dell Dimension 8400. When you look under devices, you can see all of the devices and none have the yellow exclamation mark. When you open the sound area though, it shows "no audio devices". I remember that SoundMax was the default, but it no longer shows up. Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device and VF Llive! Cam Video are all that show on Multimedia with a Belarc Profile. I've worked on this for days trying to find new drivers, etc. but no luck! Any idea what I need to do?

Does your computer came with a driver/utilities disk? The audio driver should be there. If not, try the Dell website support page o download the appropriate drivers for the laptop.

I need to reinstall windows xp home edition i have the product code but no disk

I have used full install/ disk from other brands of computers (or other dell model numbers)to reinstall operation system (must be winxphome, dont worry about service pack, you can update). If you use any dell reinstallation cd, most likely you will not have to enter your key. If you use any other computer brand, or borrow someones xphome full install disk (not upgrade), then you will need to enter your key. Only problem of using for example emachine full install disk is that is will have emachine themes. Also you will likely need to down load other drivers. You are not lemited to to using reinstall cd for your model number. Good luck

My dell computer doesn't produce any sounds and norton anti virus when installed doesn't work. Thanks in advance for the Help. noiz

First, go to the microsoft website and download microsoft security essentials

Second, go to dell website and download and install the ac97 drivers for your model of dell, those are required for the sound to work.

Third, uninstall Norton and install the security essentials.

That will give you anti-virus/malware protection, it's free, and works better than Norton.

Then, reboot, let system get all way booted up, then click start, and at the very top on the right hand side, click on Windows Update.

Follow all steps as directed.

That should fix your problem.

Oh, almost forgot, launch Security Essentials and run a FULL system scan before you run Windows update, that way you make sure you are good to go first.

your driver is affected and it will probably need a total reinstall to work fine ....there are viruses that affcets drive in such a way ..You can though go to device manager and see if the drive is in yellow with a ask sign on it ..and to click right and try to update driver ..but from my expirience in these situations it will not asign the right driver and this sirus will just affect it again in minutes
so my advice is to see if the drive accepts bootabl;e cd with the installation software ..and reinstall i t..

90% of the time windows says it islogging off but computer never shuts down and 70% of the time dvd will not power up dell dimension pentium(r) 4CPU 3.4GHz, 2GB RAM WINDOWS XP media ctr edition

As it appears it is a driver and system problem, your system or/and Driver files may have become corrupted and need a good refresh. Several ways to do this via this link alone: -

Go to http://www.techsupportalert.com/pc/cleanup-tools.html

and select what you feel is appropriate and also comfortable with to use.

Do a virus and malware scan while you are at it just for good measure.

Next, try Sytem Restore from a much earlier time.

If this fails, you may need to do a system restore using your original XPMCE disks. Do a full system backup first.

Don't forget to save your msg, eml and other hard drive emails to a folder as these will be deleted. Other programs and system files may need to be updated again too.

Explorer.exe uses all available CPU

Norton anti-virus is a resource HOG. Disable it from running at start-up. It may be trying to download updates as the pc is booting. Use AVG anti virus, it is free and works very well.
