Question about Starbucks Saeco Italia Digital Barista Coffee Machine

Reads "machine is rinsing open knob"

After descaling my Starbucks (Saeco) Barista Italia Digital machine, it continues to display "MACHINE IS RINSING. OPEN KNOB". I've emptied & refilled the water tank 4 times. I've also unplugged the machine for a few days. After turning it back on, it still reads the same. Machine still gets hot on top (cup warmer), but doesn't make any of the usual noises when turning it on. Any suggestions? It's no longer under warranty.

    I received some advice from an 'expert' but he actually copied and pasted some info. from another espresso machine manual. It did no good, so more advice please!

  • angieseay Sep 19, 2008

    After a second response, I still have no answer. I DO have the users manual. I'm NOT able to get the machine to do anything. I cannot start it up and reprogram, or get to the menu. Again, it states, "Machine is rinsing, open knob."

  • angieseay Sep 19, 2008

    The position of the steam wand has nothing to do with the problem!

  • angieseay Sep 22, 2008

    Still hoping someone can help me with this problem. I do have the manual, but I find nothing in it that pertains to this problem.

  • angieseay Sep 23, 2008

    Still looking for a solution. Any more tries?

  • angieseay Sep 23, 2008

    How do I check the sensor?

  • angieseay Sep 23, 2008

    I again checked the steam wand, made sure it was in the "correct position" and still no change.

  • angieseay Sep 28, 2008

    Okay, one last plea before I ship it off. Any more suggestions?

The appliance takes too long to
heat or a limited volume of water
comes out of the nozzle.
The circuit of the appliance is
clogged by scaling.
De-scale the appliance.

Press the steam button . The display will
say STEAMING.
• Direct the steam wand towards the drip
tray and turn the steam knob for a few
seconds so that any residual water comes out
of the steam wand. Continue until only steam
is dispensed.
• Turn the knob to OFF.

    Scaling occurs naturally when the appliance is
    used. Approximately every 3 to 4 months you
    should descale it and also when you notice a
    reduction in the water flow.
    Descaling is important in order to guarantee a
    good performance, a normal functioning and
    a good beverage.
    To descale you can use a Starbucks product
    the Starbucks® Barista Cleaner and Descaler
    especially for this purpose. Please ask Warranty
    Services for information.
    DO NOT use vinegar to descale.
    The display will read: DECALCIFYING/READY
    FOR USE, this is just another way of saying
    descaling.
    To proceed with descaling you must follow these
    instructions:
    1. Mix the solution with water as specified on
    1. Mix the solution with water as specified on
    the package and fill the water tank.
    The display will read:
    DECALCIFYING/ READY FOR USE
    2. Switch on the appliance ON /OFF power
    switch (8).
    3. Press the button (31) ON and hold for 5
    seconds to select the function.
    The display will read:
    DECALCIFYING/OPEN KNOB
    4. Direct the steam wand (13) towards the drip
    tray.
    5. Position a cup of adequate size under the
    steam wand and turn the steam knob (17)
    counterclockwise. The espresso machine
    starts the descaling cycle.
    The display will show:
    MACHINE IS DESCALING
    6. At the end of the cycle, the flow of the
    descaling solution is shut off.
    The display will read:
    DECALCIFYING FINISHED/CLOSE KNOB
    7. Turn the knob of the hot water wand (17)

    reset the message asking you to descale your machine.

    Press
    “MENU” and use the up/down keys to move the asterisk till the end of
    the line on the menu “Sign. Descal” and confirm the selection with the
    “ENTER” button.

    The following message will be displayed: "RESET DESCALING " "NO"

    Use the up/down keys to change the selection to “YES” and press “ENTER”.

    Through this reset operation, the internal counters of the two water systems are reset and the message DESCALE is removed.

Hi,

To my understanding, this is a function meant to clean and then rinse (with heat water) the inner tube that goes from the brewing section to the coffee dispenser. If it is in this constant state, then it could only mean that the machine could not complete the cycle/function. Possibilities are:

  • clogged inner tube; and
  • it may be needed to manually de-scale the machine.
Alternately, you could try to turn off this function manually by
  • turn the machine ON;
  • after it has finished its Self Test and the display shows "ENERGY SAVING", pls press the MENU/OK button;
  • when the display shows "WARMING UP", pls press the MENU/OK button;
  • the display shows "ENERGY SAVING/RINSING", pls press the MENU/OK button;
  • press the cursor (arrow down) until display shows RINSING;
  • pls press the MENU/OK button;
  • to turn OFF the rinsing, press the cursor UP.
  • pls press the MENU/OK button.
The above procedures are better explained in the user's manual available here should you be wanting one.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

How do I de calcify?

HI
The Digital Italia is programmed to descale the boilers on its own. With the machine turned on, push and hold the descale button (bottom right button). This should say "Descaling" in the display. Mix your descaling crystals in your water tank. Stir until they are completely dissolved in the water. Next have a container that can handle about 2 quarts of water under the steam wand, or have the machine positioned next to a sink. Next open the steam knob on the right side of the machine. You should hear the pump turn on and pump about 2 to 3 oz's. of water through the wand into the container. The pump should turn off and there will be a wait of about 2 minutes. The pump should turn on again and more water will come out. It will do this until it has completely drained the water tank. Do not interrupt this cycle until the machine has stopped on its own. When it does stop, the display will say "Finished descaling" push any button to continue. Rinse out the water tank and refill with fresh water. Place the water tank on the machine again, push the descale button again, then close and then open the steam knob again to let water just flow through the boilers until it is emptied by the machine, but don't turn off anything until the machine stops again on its own. This will clear the descale if you have gone to the "Reset Descale" in the menu and chose "Yes". Refill the water tank again with fresh water and then close and then open the steam knob again to prime and your ready to go.
