Front loader? Welcome to our hell.

Seriously though - it's not that bad. You need to have a different mindset with these machines. First, throw away your old detergent. You've GOT to use the type with the HE logo on it. Really. There is a difference.

Wipe out any standing water in the gasket between the drum and door opening after the last load of the day.

Leave the door open slightly to allow air to flow around between washes.

Open the other doors for detergent, bleach, etc. between laundry days.

Don't use liquid fabric softener. Use dryer sheets instead.

Run a small, empty load with hot water and bleach ONLY. No clothes, as your last load for the days that you do laundry.

Use a product like Affresh, once or twice to rid the washer of existing smells. You can use Affresh any time the smells start coming back - and follow the suggestions above.

SOURCE: clothes smell

The first thing to do is to CHECK IN AND AROUND THE RUBBER DOOR BOOT (called a bellow) for small articles of clothing (like socks and underwear) that may have gotten lodged in behind the rubber. Pull the rubber back where it meets the wash tub and look behind it. It is common for small items to get stuck here, become forgotten and start to mildew. You should check this area after each wash and clean it periodically to get rid of the formation of soap scum, mold, and mildew. HINT: When you get ready to wash a load of towels, take a dirty towel and clean the door boot thoroughly (including the areas behind the rubber). Immediately place the towel in the wash and run it on a sanitary cycle. This way you eliminate the need for cleaning rags.

PERIODICALLY RUN THE WASHER ON A CLEANING CYCLE. Place the washer on the hottest setting you have (usually a Sanitary cycle) with nothing but bleach in the wash tub. Some newer models actually have a "Clean Cycle" available now just for this purpose. This helps keep the wash tub, drain lines and pump sanitized.

CHECK AND CLEAN THE DRAIN PUMP FILTER. Accumulations of debris in the drain pump filter can also cause odors. HINT: If you own a shop vac, pull the drain hose from the standpipe at the wall and pull a vacuum on the line. This will drain any residual water left in the tub, pump and drain lines BEFORE you remove the drain pump cover. This will prevent a messy clean up later.

LEAVE THE DOOR OPEN IF POSSIBLE. When not in use, leave the door open to allow the tub to air out and to keep mold and mildew from forming on the door bellow. I know this may not be desirable in some households with small children. If too much mildew forms on the rubber and it cannot be removed, replacement of the bellow may be required.

NOTE: This problem is common with front loader style washing machines. The doors on these machines have an air tight/water tight seal that is great for sealing the washer during the wash cycle, but can be terrible for collecting small garments and for not allowing the tub to properly air out when not in use. Following these simple preventive measures can go a long way towards preventing harmful mold and mildew, and towards extending the life of the door bellow and pump.

There is a very simple way to get rid of unwanted smells. I would suggest use a cup of white vinegar every wash to clean from stale muck and smells inside the machine.

My washer smells horrible. The clothes after being washed smell horrible. I have left the door open. I have run bleach thru there 2 or 3 times in a row...didn't help. Have also run baking soda thru...

Despite washers remain with some residual water in the pump and wet components it should no be so critical as you are indicating especially if you cleaned it as you stated. You are not describing the smell but try to isolate the source, like the washer drainage point (odors coming from sewage), behind the washer, and inside or under the washer where the mechanical components are. It wouldn't be surprising to find a dead rat, lizard or pests in there. Sometimes even wet laundry falling behind the appliances stinks strongly. Be safe moving and reaching on difficult places. Good luck.

Wet clothes after spin cycle and bad mildew smell. I have seen many complaints about mildew smell with He3 & He4 well really frnt loaders in general. The bad mold is so gross and the smell is horrible.

Clean tub boot the best you can with bleach. Then run an empty load with sunlight automatic dish soap (verry little). Then this should clean and freshin the washer up. The best thing to do is not to shut the door on washer when not in use.

Oh angel!
a rose by any other name!

If your clothes smell worse after washing then the machine is full of gunge from all the previous washes. One of the worst things that puts a gluggy deposit inside machines is of all things Softener!
You could try putting a generous two cups of Sugar Soap Concentrate into your machine and filling it with warm water. Then let it stand for 24 hrs, Then start the wash cycle.
This may clear the gunge. If not the only sure remedy is a strip down and degunk and that will cost you a few dollars.

I have a soured smell in my dryer when it not running

Does it appear that the smell is in the cabinet rather than the drum? I'm guessing that bugs or mice are living in there. There are no components in the dryer case that would smell except for a slight electrical odor. Remove the case and look around! Look for droppings around the back.

Kenwood elite washer is spurting water 3 to 4 times during the agitate cycle. i do not know how to take it apart. it does not leak water at any other time.

The smell in my Kenwood Elite washer is horrible. I use bleach, I use the new TIde Washing Machine Cleaner, I have tried the hot cycles, I have left it open between washings but can't leave it open very much because we have a door out to garage that would hit the washer door if left open too wide. I can't leave clothes in there too long or they smell too much and have to rewash. The clothes never come out of washer smelling super clean. After I dry them using a scented dryer sheet, they are acceptable, but I never have really clean smelling scented clothes any more.

Musty smell

Make sure the door is kept open when not in use and also make shure that you do the cleaning procedure as described on the book once a month.
