60 gig ps3

I have a 60 gig ps3 that keeps freezing in the web browser and sony store, it can happen after 2 hours or just 2 minutes, There is no certain sequence that causes this because just yesterday it froze on MGS4 and before that it wouldnt save, but I have not gotten a trouble code yet. Any info would be great.

What about the thermal paste over the cpu and gpu , will this help any thing at all. I have artic silver 5 and all the tools to take it apart I have replaced blu ray drives before but this is a little different, also I have repaired quite a few 360's too. Mainly I just wanted to show that I am not scared to take it apart and I have taken others apart. This 60 gig has never been apart though, I was reading that the old 60 gig an 20 gig ps3's have a problem with overheating so much they can blow out the core, I appreciate the super fast info too.

Thankyou, very much, Llamma is one of my favorite websites to use, yeah microsoft was messy too. I know about the dot for sure I used to build computers and when I worked at bb that was a huge problem manufacturers would over use the paste and cause overheating, I have the artic silver cleaner and purifier, I will definately do that for sure. Thankyou again.

Ok I just went through the ps3 and it still is freezing on me, I just redid the gpu and cpu with artic silver, and I completly cleaned it out now it still acts the same I dont know where to go now. I am wondering if its the bluray player. Any Ideas would be great, I have replaced the harddrive also the power supply gets really hot its hard to leave your hand on it could that be the cause of it over heating. It will give me no error codes but when it tries to auto save or just manually save it will say there was an error saving would you like to retry. please help me I am at my wits end with this.

  • sloth92 Sep 29, 2008

yeah I replaced it with a samsung 250 gig hard drive and 2 different seagates too a 160 gig and a brand new 80 gig. I have changed out the hard drive too many times for it to be the hard drive. I am now using the original 60 gig on my other laptop to prove that it was fine I changed over to my windows drive and it works great so I am under the impression that the hard drive is good, but it still doest want to save. so it makes me wonder.

  • sloth92 Sep 29, 2008

now that I dont know I need to check I started wondering that too. I have a few extra fans so I will chek it out. Is the power supply supposed to get so hot it burns to the touch I cant keep my hand on it and my hands are very rough from working on cars. Oh well I will try a few things and I will get back in touch, thankyou very much for your help and super fast comments.

  • sloth92 Sep 29, 2008

Hey there I just test the fan and it works but I swapped fans just in case, and I swapped power supplies too so its going to be tested now and I will get back to ya.

  • sloth92 Sep 30, 2008

well that didnt work so I am going to try a different bluray drive and go from there.

  • sloth92 Oct 01, 2008

yeah I bought laser and the assembly cage thing the kem-400aaa mechanism so it should be here soon for me to test out we will then go from there, I have read about these 60gigs actually blowing out the core for the gpu I am worried that it could be on its way out if so I will just sell it for parts but I will let you know if the problem gets fixed any other way. Thankyou for all of your help.

Firmware 2.40 had a bug that was causing this problem even bricking ps3's my buddys had the same symptoms I tried the same fixes you tried eventually it bricked. Sony will fix it but it sounds like its too late for you. You voided the warranty too bad.

Hello. Freezing is ALWAYS one of 2 problems. Heat or a jammed platter in the hard drive. Always try the solution for heat first as it is the most common.

HEAT: Get a can of compressed air and blow out your system from the front and sides. Most of the dust should come out of the back. This is a VERY common problem and this is the easiest solution.

IF SOLUTION ABOVE DOESN"T WORK, TRY SOLUTION BELOW!

Hard Drive: Get a different hard drive, instasll it into the PS3 and test it. They only cost $30-$150 for up to 120GB if you wanted to upgrade.

I hope this helps. Good luck and happy gaming!!

That is always a posibility. I can refer you to a guide at llama.com just click on the PS3 info. But remember, with the Arctic Silver...just a dot, not alot!! LOL! Sony was sloppy with their paste as you will notice when you take off the heatsink/fan shroud. Just take it all apart, clean it REALLY good with some duster. Get some anti-static whipes and wipe out the shell good, and clean off the fan really good, replace the paste, put it back together and you should be good to go. UNLESS it's the hard drive.

There could actually be a problem with the hard drive you have in. I have heard of different types and brands that can cause problems. Also, if something inside the hard drive is malfunctioning it will make the system freeze. I had one system that was freezing on start up. The last place I thought to look was the hard drive. But when I switched it, that solved the freezing.

Well, I've always solved any freezing problems with all of the solutions I have given you so far. The only other thing I can think of is the fan. Is the fan motor switching into 2,3,4th gear?

No problem, thats why I'm here!!

Yes, the power supplies get rather hot, but if you think it gets hotter then normal which is possible you can swap that out and try a different one.

I'm stumped!! Sorry I couldn't be more help! Oh, just remember that the PCB board on the Blu-ray player is "married" to the MotherBoard. It will not work with any other motherboard.

i dont really think the HDD change matters.the fault might be from the game you are playing, probably the disc or something.please give a more vivid description of what happens.and the game you are playing too.

I have this problem with my 60 gig, I think its due to overheating, I took it apart and put some Artic Silver Thermal paste on the CPU and GPU and it played for about 6-7 hours but then started again. Could be due to overheating or possibly the GPU is going bad
