Check the Fuel Line
See if the gas is getting to the Carb.
Place a small about of Fuel on the Spark Plug (Arc) and then see if that
will help it crank over. see if the Spark plug is wet or Dry and then try it again.

I have done this with my snow blowers and it has help
and my pressure washer.

Thanks Jayson

Hi,

If I may add and if it is a conventional (carb type gasoline engine).... You have confirmed that:

  • there is spark at the sparkplug;
  • fuel is getting into the carburetor.
Perhaps what need to be looked at is, if the fuel is being sprayed into the intake manifold from the carbs. You can try:
  • removing the air filter and the baseplate;
  • choke the throat of the carb by placing the palm of your hand;
  • crank the engine while full throttle;
  • there should be suction felt on the palm of your hand;
  • the palm should be covered with fuel;
  • if none, carb problem. Disassemble and clean with special attention to the jets, ports.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Remove the valve cover and make sure the camshaft is turning and the valves open and close while cranking, sometimes when tractors sit with fuel in them the fuel will gum up the valves causing them to stick and bend the push rods that are very small, either way you need to check to be sure the cam is turning -jeff

  • Anonymous Sep 18, 2008

    if this a carburated you should also remove the bottom bowl of the carb and make sure the float is not cracked and filled with fuel,, while you are in there blow compressed air thru the main jet, if you pull the plug out after cranking for a minute is it very wet and smell of fuel?, and does the motor turn over very fast or slow with a good battery? -jeff

You didn't mention if you were getting a spark at the plug, has the magneto quit working?

  • Richard Finch Sep 17, 2008

    Connect the spark plug lead to a spare spark plug, hold that spark plug against the engine block to ground it (use pliers or something to hold it so as to insulate yourself from the spark plug) then crank the engine over and see if a spark jumps the electrode gap on the plug top.

    If you have no spark then you either have a bad lead or magneto problems.

How long have you owned the unit? Once I have all the needed information I can assist you further. Did you check the fuel filter I assume? Also dependent on the age it may be sediment in the gas tank.
I await your response to assist you further.
Thanks,
Lee

    I would start by checking the fuse. It is usually near the solenoid inline
    with a red wire coming from the battery cable side of the solenoid. Let me know. If you find any of this helpful and have a moment to accept and rate the solution accordingly it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Lee

    Then the only other possibility if you know its getting spark and fuel is air. You said it is cranking over correct?
    Thanks,
    Lee

Which fuseable link is for fuel pump on a 1988 Ford ltd crown Vic 5.0

If it won't hold pressure my first thought is the fuel pressure regulator. It is on the back of the motor, under all the wiring. It is behind the throttle body and next to the intake manifold on the 5.0 liter. You can get to it without pulling the manifold, but you have to take all of the hoses to the throttle body off to get to it. Should be either chrome or yellow in color.

I have husqvarna yth1542xp runs about 5 minutes then shuts off. iblew thru gas line towards tank seemed like something was in line or tank. started and it ran another 5 minytes or so and same thing...

Try it with the fuel cap loose ( not off just loose). This will see if the tank is venting properly. You may also have a bad fuel filter, fuel lines or trash in the tank.
