Hi there i have a sony 50" rear projection tv model no kl-50w2 the screen is very dark and i have been told i need to replace the bulb, so im looking for the bulb and the price

yes bulbs dont smell unless they pop plus its 3 bulbs in there, plus the tv would still have power/standby lights, and it's not that type of smell, replace the bulb but im sure this will not fix the problem, also my experience with dlp set it is often not worth repair, good luck you need more help or question just ask good luck

Dark picture is indication that tv needs new lamp.
Replace lamp in tv get bright picture, please buy Sony original lamp for good picture in tv.

Okay - now we are geting somewhere - This is an LCD rear screen projection Sony TV.
A few things to consider:
1) Is it in an fairly cleanly or dusty environment.
2) How long have you had it - how old is it?
3) Has it ever been taken apart and the output lens been cleaned ?
'large dust build up causes the dark spotsin the corners possibly'.
Here is the issue on LCD projection
a) If the lamp has an incredible amount of hours on it then it gets extremely hot and will damage the Polarizer and Analyzer filters 'your discoloring issue' and then harms the LCD panel 'not good'.
Ways to check your lamp - pull it out. If you look into the reflector and at the lamp element 'bulb' is there a lot of white build up? If there is, this is carbon build up. If there is any deformity to the lamp's nice and eliptical Bulb element or dark areas. Replace it.

These are both CRT type TV's(3 picture tubes drive the image) with different screen sizes and the CRT's are not interchangeable

Adjust video settings:

1. Press Wega Gate
2. Select Settings
3. Highlight Video
4. Press + to select
5. Adjust/increase the brightness.
6. Press Wega gate to exit.

If picture is still dark, you need to replace the lamp again. Sony recommends that you replace the lamp:

1. After approximately 8,000 hours of use.
2. When the screen becomes dark or the color becomes unusual.
3. When the lamp indicator on the front of the TV flashes.
   

optical block may be going bad. Sony is offering the repair for free. if not on your model they are sometimes replacing tv. raise some hell and they will help you. Good luck. hope that helps.

Your TV requires service and cleaning of screen, mirror and 3 lenses (of CRTs) as looks dusty.
Below is an exploded view how to take off front beznet assembly of this TV to clean inside with moist cotton cloth.
Unplug TV before taking off front of TV.

I had the same problem, it because of heat buildup, and the inside is fried, you need repair
