Refrigerator electrical short

I have a whirlpool side by side refrigerator, model 22RF. I bought it used and it was working properly according to the previous owner. I plugged it into a GFCI outlet and it trips the outlet. I have disconnected each component at the electrical connector and the outlet still trips. Any suggestions on where or how to isolate an electrical wire short?

I also have a whirlpool side by side refrigerator, 2001 25cuft. I recevied it used and it was working properly according to the previous owner. I plugged it into a GFCI outlet in the garage and it trips the outlet. I have disconnected each component at the electrical connector and the outlet still trips. It will run for several hours without tripping the circuit, but after about eight hours, usually overnight, it trips and then cannot be plugged in to the same circuit for several more hours. After waiting about 4 hours, it will then work again. Any suggestions on where or how to isolate an electrical wire short?

SOURCE: fridge problem

You may have a short some where in the fridge. If you have a multimeter, I would suggest metering the power leads to the compressor. The compressor may be bad, if you find no shorts in the metering of the power leads.

SOURCE: refridgerator trips the gfci outlet but will run on a regular out

sometimes with age the GFCI may start to get weak from continous current heat/cool--expansion/contraction.A regular outlet is fed by a circuit breaker which may have a higher amperage rating. If you replace the GFCI it may take care of the problem. The only fuse I can think of will be a circuit breaker in the fuse panel.Hope this helps. SOURCE: frig cools works great all day then trips the gfci

Hi Sturkle;
Does this happen say- every 6-8hrs? If so you may find the defrost element has a short, or defrost timer is faulty. Defrost element is located in the freezer compartment, Time located an back of fridge.. Use a qualified person when playing with electrics...Cheers

SOURCE: whirlpool refrigerator trips gfci outlet

Yes ,, if the fridge outlet is behind the fridge and therefore not accessible for use by counter top appliances .. then yes change it to a regular outlet.
The cause is probably the compressor, getting a bit noisy..electrical noise I mean.

Ice build up in freezer causing the refrigerator to warm up

Your defrost circuit is most likely not working. Unplug your refrigerator and take off the back wall inside the freezer and ohm out the bimetal thermostat (it's a round, metal thingy clipped onto the top or side of your evaporator coil lines.

It should read a short. If it doesn't, replace it. If it does read a short, then it's probably good and you'll need to ohm out your defrost heating element.

It usually looks like a baking element you would have in your electric stove and wraps around the sides and bottom of the evap coil. You should get some sort of resistance reading. If it's open, replace it. If it's reading a decent amount of resistance, then you'll need to look at your defrost timer (or main control PCB if you have a newer refrigerator). I'd need specific model information to help you there.

Good luck!

My Whirlpool refrigerator trips the main breaker of 40 Amps

A refrig cannot pull 40 amps in defrost , unless there is a direct short in the defrost system ( timer , heater , bimetal ) . I would use an extention cord ( for test purposes only ) , and try a different plug . Sounds like the circuit breaker is weak . In defrost , the MOST you should get , is 6 amps . This will not throw a 40 amp breaker . If you have an amp meter , remove the back refrig panel behind the refrig , and connect to one of the power cord lines (just not the green ground ) , turn into defrost and check the amps . This will tell you if short is in refrig , or weak breaker .

According to GE this uses a 40 Watt appliance bulb. You should be able to get one from any department or home improvement store.

GE Ice dispencer not working properly

for a very informative video on trouble shooting your refrigerator http://gei.portals.streamos.com/cc/channel.php?emcid=1416&empid=4533&packageid=0000

I had the problem with no water or ice dispenced and the lights dim when dispencer is used and the refrigerator compresser stops after using the dispencer and had to unplug and reset unit. GE DID NOT WARANTY IT. I bought a new motherboard for about $88 and fixed my problem. As the video shows there can be other problems that will cause some of these symptoms but not all at once. My frige was only 2 years old when this happened.
