Question about Garmin GPS

1 Answer

I have a Nuvi 200w that I received last December as a gift. This unit takes forever to aquire a satellite. The "DIFFICULY AQUIRING SATELLITES" message comes on 90% of the times I try to use it. Only on rare occassions will it pick up a satellite within a few minutes. The longest time, so far, has been about 40-45 minutes. The norm is between 10-20 minutes. I mentioned this problem to three friends of mine who also have GPS units (another Garmin, a Tom-Tom and a Magellan). We all took our units out to the middle of a local baseball field (no trees, no buildings, no towers)and turned them on at the same time. The three other units picked up satellites almost immediately, but mine, after about five minutes, displayed the difficulty aquiring satellites message. I chose "continue" and about 10 miutes later I still didn't have a satellite so we walked off the field. I firmly believe there is a problem with my unit and that I need to send it back to Garmin while it is still under warranty. Do you agree?

While under warranty.... yes.... Make sure it's been registered on their site before calling them and requesting an RMA number.

Good luck!

The dispaley states "aquiring antenna" but never finds it,can this be fixed?

Yes. However, it depends on what is causing the acquiring signal message. It could be that you just have to replace the dock or antenna. But it could also mean the unit is going bad, in which case it would need to be repaired. www.tss-radio.com has a repair guy, though with that unit being discontinued for as long as it has, he may not have parts. You may have to search around for a replacement on amazon or ebay.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 1300. When I power the unit on, it says aquiring satellites. It never locates a satellite. Any ideas?

If your using it in your car and your car has tinted windows, the window tint may contain a metal oxide (most common on newer cars) which interferes with the signal. Try holding the unit next to an open window. If that works you may need to get an external antenna from garmin that you can attach on the outside of your car.

Garmin nuvi 200w not getting any signal....

I recommend trying the hard reset and the newest webupdater (March 31, 2010) and se if you get better results.

  1. Back up your Favorites.
  2. Perform a Hard Reset.
  3. Download and then run Garmin WebUpdater to replace its firmware / system software.

I hope that helps.

Trouble acquiring satellites

try the reset
Note: A master reset will erase all waypoints or favorites and will restore your unit to the default factory settings.

with the unit off, try pressing and holding your finger on the low right corner of the screen and slide the power switch to the on position until you see the message "confirm if you really want to delete all user data?" hit yes and let it restart. then it will set up the nuvi again, so follow the prompts.

if that fails, hook up the nuvi to the web updater and get the latest update

(actually i would do this either way)

Nuvi Blackout

This is a known problem that Garmin is fixing. Look at:

http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/us/support

Under "TOP FAQ" there is an entry for "My nuvi 755T, 765T, 775T or 785T will no longer turn on."

You will need to return your unit to Garmin for them to fix it.
