Question about Hitachi Flat Panel Televisions
Me and my husband just bought this tv a few months ago. We are now getting a perfect black square that almost covers the whole tv. And it is like it has a mind of its own. It does it on certian channels and only when shows are on and not on local commercials. It is really strange. Its like it does it when it wants too. Here are some pics. Thanks, Cassie
It sounds ( and looks ) exactly like a form of Close Captioning . One of the options for close captioning will put a full size block just like that on your screen . Though I have never seen text in it , thats what it is . Go into the menus and find the CC and turn it off.

If that black box is generated by Tv, it should be there all the time, like on cable, av input etc.
as you said its not always, so cable top box is suspected which can generate such box as well.
I would suggest when you see that box in tv reception, simply play dvd player and check is that box still appears on dvd input? I hope black box wont appear in playback of dvd player.
Need further help, please let me know.

Had the same problem. Was quoted $800 to fix. Searched the internet for 6 months and found this thread on avforums.com
Read through all the posts. Very simple fix, but you have to have some mechanical inclinations or you can cause more problems than you started with. I was up to 5 of the black lines, but decided to attempt the soldering these guys did and fixed it all for the cost of a soldering iron! Even if you decide not to attempt it, it gives you somewhere to start to tell a technician.
