chek that the power pack is ok. Sometimes can break down and make the problem you are saying.

Go to the shop where you've bought the batteries and tell them the problem. Bring with you the laptop so they can check it is true what you are saying.

It does take rechargeable batteries. Remove the back and change batteries for Ni-cad or similar rechargeable batteries. Trying to recharge normal batteries is dangerous. Any rechargeable make of battery will normally work and they recharge when phone is in cradle

I'm assuming that the new battery you refer to is a battery pack, and that we're talking about a home phone, not a cell phone. Ensure that the base for the phone is plugged into an active outlet that is not controlled by a wall switch (test the outlet with a tester or plug-in lamp). Also make sure that you don't leave the phone off its base for extended periods of time as my wife is prone to doing! The base is the charger; most phones will only go for a few hours even with a new battery. If everything else is right, try swapping batteries with a known good phone, or if that's not possible, exchange the battery. You might be able to have the battery tested at a place like Batteries + as well...it is not unheard of to get a bad one even when brand new.

Take the battery pack off, there are two coiled springs that touch the batteries.
Stretch these springs up slightly, but not too much.
Then replace the battery pack.

have same problem with canon sd10. bought new battery and new charger, THIS IS A CANON HARDWARE PROBLEM I assure you
