My Panasonic DVD recorder won't turn on after a power out. Another user says that this is common, it may be a burnt diode or a damaged power supply. WOULD TURNING THE POWER STRIP OFF RIGHT AFTER THE POWER...

If the power supply has already suffered the brunt of the surge, it could be an expensive repair, possibly not economical.

Of course, you can submit this recorder to a service centre, and obtain a quote on any repairs/board replacement required, then make a decision afterwards on that basis - yes or no - it's up to you what you do.

Sorry to say the power surge has quite likely destroyed several components in your DVD recorder's PSU beyond economical repair; it would not just be a 'burnt diode'.

However, in the future, if you are worried about likely surges occurring again, you can always switch units off at the power point when you aren't using them (example, overnight when you go to bed or when you go out for more than an hour at a time). This may help prevent expensive damage to other appliances.

Surge protection on your household power (or a surge protected powerboard/strip if that's cheaper and easier to get) is recommended.

DVD stuck on Panasonic DMR ES10 in eternal cycle of "self check"/"please wait"

My DMR ES10 was eternally in a "self check"/"please wait" cycle. Couldn't even turn it off normally. By pressing the "Power off" for 10 seconds it will turn off forcefully. Now, after it says "BYE" press the "CH UP" (on the recorder, NOT on the remote))+"STOP" (with the recorder turned off) for another 10 seconds. This will force the opening and we now can take the DVD off. Turn the DVD recorder ON and, if the problem is on the laser, because of dirt, etc it will work and we can now run a DVD cleaner. In this case, the machine was stuck just because the first thing it does is check the DVD inside, and because it can't and just keep trying, it will never do anything else, until we take the DVD off with it turned off.
