Question about Frigidaire 16.5 Cu. Ft. Top-Mount Refrigerator - White

Open Question

New Frigidaire refrigerator compressor won't start

I bought a new Frigidaire FRT17B3JW on Sunday....put it in the garage.

It ran for almost a day and tripped the 15a breaker. There is a cordless phone and garage lights on that breaker....we may have been running the vacuum when it tripped.

I tried to run an extension cord, from an outlet with just the washer on luck. So, I plugged it back into the original outlet and don't plan to run the vacuum. It started and ran for a day and stops cooling. I made an extension cord out of 12/2 wire and hd connectors. Its 20 feet long. I connected it in the outlet at the washer....compressor will not start. I put it back on the original outlet....compressor will not start.

In all cases, the light is on.

I'm out of ideas.

wihtout replacing the relay there really isnt any way to tell if its the compressor or the relay. the relay is veyr inexpensive in comparison to the compressor usually less than 70 bucks. and the best part is you can replace it yourself as opposed to paying a service company. this is the part number 218721113 and it prices at 38 dollars thru
once you replace the part if the compressor starts you should be ok. if it doesnt start then you will need to call a service company to replae the compressor or look at replaing the refrig. if the unit is less than 5 years old it may be under warranty for the compressor so check into that first. if I can be of further assistance dont hesitate to ask. thanks Peyton

Something has stopped your compressor. The part could be the start relay, start capacitor, overload or the defrost control board. where are the buzzing sounds coming from ? Sea Breeze

Having found there is no defrost timer on my frigidaire rlr1450 could my problem be the thermostat . on saterday the fridge ran all day and froze everything , switched it off overnight , on sunday it ran...

Yes your refrigerator could and most likely has a thermostat problem. Thermostats go bad in several ways, by not sensing the correct temperature, not working at all or sticking on until fresh food section becomes a freezer. Although I cannot find a Frigidaire Model RIR1450 in the US database that does not mean there is not one worldwide. Your refrigerator does have a thermostat most likely behind the control panel inside the fresh food section, Thanks Sea Breeze

Bought a new whirlpool refrigerator for the garage and was told by the salesman at Lowe's that it will still operate. Now I hear if the weather gets below 30 degree it will not operate. Is that true...

One thing that would concern me is the temperature that the compressor will go down to.

With a cold, or very cold, compressor the oil inside it will be sluggish possibly causing motor start up problems. There is also the fact that the refrigerant will have migrated to the coldest spot, namely the compressor, and this refrigerant will wash away any lubricant on start up.

The first thing I would suggest is that you fit a crankcase heater to the bottom half of the compressor and provide a permanent power supply to it.

Who is performing this service ? The line he is referring to is the liquid (capillary tube) suction line which is welded together for proper heat exchange. If that is the case then this should be addressed by the manufacturer. Was the system properly evacuated and a new drier installed ?
Was the condenser clean ? The newer refrigerants along with overheated systems cause any moisture in the system to release salt which mixes with compressor oil. This sludge clogs up the capillary tube stopping refrigerant flow.

My compressor will not run.

The start capacitor could be bad. Also the compressor could be worn out. If compressor starts and runs then stops and become hot makes me think the compressor is defective. How old is your refrigerator? Even so compressors go bad. Thanks, Seabreeze

Does outside temperature affect performance of freezer

Top mount refrigerator installed in a garage and the food in the freezer is defrosting when
the temperature in the garage goes below 55 degrees fahrenheit.
On top mount refrigerators you cycle the compressor and fan/fans from the food
compartment temperature. When the room temperature gets colder than 55 F, you have
long off times waiting for the food compartment to warm enough to trip the cold control.
This long off time is allowing the freezer temperature to get high enough that food can start
to defrost.
There is a kit for refrigerators installed in applications where the temperature can go as low
as 34 F and still maintain good freezer temperatures. The kit part number is 5303918301
and it contains a heater that mounts in the control box and an instruction sheet advising
how to install the heater.
Kit 5303918301 contains:
Part # 5303950194 Instruction sheet
Part # 241532101 Heater

Freezer losing temp... intermittent buzzing sound

Either the start device for the compressor is bad or the compressor has died. The easiest way to tell is to replace the start device. It cost around 30-40 bucks and the part number for it is 218721119. In most of these cases its just a bad start device. The start device is located on the side of the compressor in the bottom back of the unit. It will have a capacitor attached to it that you will want to keep and stick on the new one. If you need anymore help just let me know. Good Luck!

Dirty coils might be your problem. You might have a refrigerant problem as well. Try cleaning it first then have a tech put gages on it. Doesn't sound too serious

Our refrigerator/freezer will stop working (not cool or freeze) then days later will begin to work again.

It's either the start device on the compressor or you have a bad compressor. You'll have to pull it away from the wall and take the bottom back panel off to check the compressor. It will likely be real hot to the touch from what you described happening. If there is a little white colored box on the left side take that off and remove the wires, etc. and shake it... if it rattles and debris falls out then that's the problem. It's fairly common and they make a kit to replace it with a better designed part that's real easy to install yourself. If your compressor has a label on it with a blue indian head symbol, then you're out of luck as that brand pretty much sucks and is destroyed by heat. It would mean a new compressor and then you'd be lucky if the new one even worked from the factory. Avoid those Tecumseh compressors at all cost.
