This problem could occur if there is not enough battery charge remaining to retract the lens to normal shutdown position. If using alkaline batteries, replace them with new ones and turn the camera on again. Also note that even if the alkaline batteries have sufficient charge, at a temperatures of 5 degree (C) or lower, the camera may as well suddenly turn off when trying to shoot (operate the zoom, press the shutter button, etc.). In this case, it is recommended to put the batteries in the battery case and then warm them up in your pocket, etc., and then re-insert them in your camera. If using rechargeable batteries, please charge them and then re-insert into the camera.

The motor mechanism must have gone bad... or something must have struck in that lens movement area..

Please goto ur nearest service center and get it replaced.

Sony cybershot DSC-W170 lens malfunction

sounds like you have dust, sand of some type stuck in the retracting lense. Ive found someone to tell me to take out my batterys and SD card, then tap the bottom of the camera on a table top. Replace the batteries and power up. Doing this, I was told it loosens up the debri for the lense to retract to close and to open again.

Sony Cybershot DSC W50

The same thing has happened to me. Except the batteries died with the lens out, and now it's not letting me turn it on at all! It stays on for maybe, 3 seconds, then shuts off.

I'm trying to figure out what to do.
If you figure this out, please email me at katiekins259@aim.com

Thanks for listening!

Sony Cybershot dsc-p73 dropped

I also dropped this camera from waist high and the lens was stuck out and would not retract or let me do anything. I ended up having it sent to Sony to replace the lens and it cost me $200. I paid $300 for the camera to begin with but to me this was the BEST camera I'd ever had and was worth it. Before repairing it, I bought a new Sony Cybershot DSC-W80 since the original one I had dropped was no longer available. I was NOT pleased with the quality of the new camera at all and it was supposed to be better than the one I dropped. That's when I decided it was worth repairing the broken one and worth the cost.
