HP K550 Prints Solid Gray Boxes Around Items

Hello,
I Have K550 that after running out of black ink and replacing the cartridge, is now printing gray boxes across the page over anything that is printed. (If there is nothing on a line, no gray box.) 13,000 copies and has been a good printer otherwise.

Thanks,

Steve

Hi drglass1 -

13,000 copies - that's awesome! although you've surely fixed this problem by now, for future refs or someone else searching for an answer... you might find this ref hp support helpful. happy printing!

Step 4: Clean the printheads
If the print quality is still bad, clean the printheads:
1. Make sure the printer is loaded with unused white paper.
2. Open the printer Toolbox and select the Printer Services tab.
3. Click Clean Printheads . A Clean Printheads window opens. Click Level 1 Clean .
4. Examine the page that prints for print defects.
a. If there are no defects, click Exit . Stop troubleshooting here .
b. If there are defects on the page, click Level 2 Clean . 5. Examine the page that prints for print defects.
a. If there are no defects, click Exit . Stop troubleshooting here .
b. If there are defects on the page, click Level 3 Clean . Note that Level 3 cleaning uses a lot of ink – it is not recommended if the cartridges are low on ink. - JW50

New HP 56 cartridge prints green

hello, are you sure its green, since this is a black in cart, only thing i can think of is machine not printing black , and the color ink cartridge is contaminated, this would be due to the docking area for the cartridge, on the left side of machine, there are 2 black rubber cups that the ink cartridges move over to seal. sometimes these cups have residual ink, which will contaminate the new inks. clean these black cups, and replace inks

Black is printing gray

Has your printer defaulted to 'draft' printing? That's where grey printing seems to come from.

Color Quality is not so great anymore

Sounds like the machine needs to be cleaned. Probably a heavy use machine that has quite a bit of ink spray build up on the inside. I would imagine your service station has quite a bit of ink build up in it as well possibly causing the cartridges not to be cleaned like they should. A good cleaning cures most of what ails inkjet printers. We would charge $85 in our shop for complete disassembly down to the metal frame and cleaning.

Streaks / Bands of broken print area

First with a clean soft cloth and a very small amt of alcohol clean off the underside of the printer carridge (the holder for the print heads) also where the print heads cleaning station is clean out any large masses of congealed link. Then remove the ink cartridge in question and with a pencil eraser gently rub the contacts and both the cartridge and the carridge replace the cartridge. Using the software tools for the printer clean and align the printheads ( if there is an option to do so). If this dosn't fix the problem try a different ink cartridge.
