Question about Western Digital (WDXB1200BBRNN) 120 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Cannot see WD 120 GB in my Computer

Hi
I have a 120GB Western Digital external drive. Till yesterday, it worked great. Then I plugged it in my wife's computer to get some files off there. It hung the explorer in that PC and I pulled the USB out of the port and then, when I tried to connect to my PC, it lit up and i heard some clicks and then nothing happened. I dont see a drive letter to access the drive anymore.

I have tried various PCs and it says found new hardware and goes through the process and says ready to use. BUT NO DRIVE LETTER in explorer to access the drive. Please HELP !!

PS: I can see the drive in the device manager whenever i plug it in.
I DON'T see the drive when i go Start - Control Panel - Administrative tools - computer management - Disk Management

Hmm .. I dont want to open the drive.. Is there no other way to fix it? I don't care for the data in there. I just want it to be working again.

Sounds like the USB interface is working, but the physical drive is not. Remove the drive from it's external case, and try a different hard drive. If that works, your drive is the problem. If it still doesn't work, the USB to IDE interface is the issue.

Try mounting the original IDE drive internally, and see if you can read it there. If not, you'll need to send it to a data recovery center.

Visit the manufacturer's web page, and navigate to their support / downloads page. There is usually a diagnostic utility for free download there. Often, it needs to be copied to CD or floppy. Boot from that, and it should give you in depth answers to what might be wrong with the drive.

Try it on another computer to see if it is working. Sometimes the USB cable can fail, too, so if you have another USB cable that fits, try it.

If it still does not work, perhaps the drive has failed.

Does you drive make any sounds like these? If yes you have a mechanical problem and you should get a specialist to work on it.
If not - try to remove the drive from the enclosure and connect it directly to the computer to recover your files.
