Question about GPS Devices

1 Answer

I have to connect 2 wires (red and black) to the wiring of my motorcycle to use the motorcycle power to feed my zumo 500 sat nav. I don't have any wiring diagrams for my bike. Can anyone point me in the right direction? My local garage wants loads of cash to connect the 2 wires!

1. Most public librarys carry a series of books by "Chilton" or "Hayes" which are basically illustrated guides to rebuilding every make and model of non-commercial vehicle.

2. The black can most likely be connected to the negative terminal of the battery.

3. The red is typically connected to the "accessory" position of the ignition switch. Often, you can simply crimp a connector on the red wire, and insert it into one of the spare fuse locations in the fuse panel.

I'd suggest you don't pay their bill! ****. You'll need to find the accessory supply and connect the red wire it to that. Goodness knows where they connected the black (negative wire) if they are that stupid. Don't trust their work - I home they did not work on your brakes.

Help

You need a multimeter helps. you need an earth which is the car body (black), and 2 power feeds, 1 is turned on and off at the ignition (could be blue or yellow or red maybe) and the other is always on (probably red). find a wire which is a power feed or run one from the fusebox obn the car battery with an inline fuse installed.
Connect speakers to the other wires which are normally the one with two colours on them.they are possible paired together.
You will probably find other wires to control the antenor or the amplifier.

you will have to fix the stereo into the hole last too.
to find the power, connect the black lead of the multimeter to the car body, put it to a 15 volt setting, and test the wires for power if there are any. switch the ignition to see if it is switched. If the wire doesn't show a voltage then put the multimeter on ohms and see if you get a reading. once you have found your wire you will have to join them. buy a crimp tool and automotive crimp plugs. if you tell them what therefor they will know.

How to hardwire to HD motorcycle

Black or ground to chasis, Red to battery if you want it to have power all the time.
To the fuse box to a switched line if you want it to turn off with the bike.
Be sure to have a fuse in line with the power wire to prevent damage to the GPS umit or a fire on the bike.

Wiring To an 08 Ultra Classic

If you are mounting the unit to the bars or fairing, I would recommend using a power lead which is available in the fairing, rather than the AUX accessory switch.  The AUX switch sends power to a connector under the seat, in front of the battery.  You would need to run new wires up under the fuel tank, along the neck and into the fairing to connector your Zumo to the AUX.  Instead, there is a 12+ V switched ignition power lead which is not used on U.S. touring bikes and would be perfect for connecting your Zumo.  Pull the fairing off the bike (7 screws, TORX T-27) and look at the headlight harness, which is 3 wires, black, white, yellow.  Attached to this harness will be 2 wires, a black and an orange w/ white stripe.  The orange will have a red silicone cap over it to prevent it from shorting out in the fairing.  Cut the zip-ties which connect these 2 wires to the headlight harness and then hook it up to your Zumo, black is negative, Orange positive.

GARMIN ZUMO GPS 550- how to i connect power source to my Harley mc and speakers?

Red lead to the plus and black to the minus of the battery, connecting to the speakers youl'll nead something with an aux input, or a small amplifier, the output signal of the Zumo is just enough to power a head set!
