Psion Revo replacement restore

I have just bought a replacement Psion Revo Plus and need to restore the back up from the old Psion onto the new Psion. I'm guessing I need to create some sort of new files for the new Psion on my PC but I'm not very technical!!
Can you help??

    Hi,
The new Psion was second hand & has not come with any software. The old Psion software is set up on my PC but when you connect it only recognises the old Psion & I cann't restore old psion data onto new psion. I know this should be easy but I was talked through how to do this once before by Psion support (who are no longer supporting!) and I remember having to copy files somehow & it was quite complicated. I need a step by step idiots guide I'm afraid!

What do you do if you no longer have access to a Psion, but need to access some data from an old Psion backup on your PC? Native Psion files can't be read on a PC, but fortunately, there are some solutions:

  • Use the PsiWin PC connectivity suite to convert the Psion-format files to a format that can be read on the PC.
  • Download and install the Psion ER5 emulator - this gives you a Psion machine on your PC, and will allow you to access your old data on a PC - See our emulator setup page. From the emulator, you may be able to print or export your data to a text file, or use a third -party Psion converter
  • Consider borrowing or buying an old Psion machine, loading the files onto the Psion, then printing the documents or data as a text file
  • Find another friendly Psion user that may be able to convert the file into a format that can be read by a PC for you. If you don't know of another user, try asking for help in our Psion forum
also
Data conversion for the Psion can be quite complicated, due to the file formats used by Psion / Symbian. You should find that the PsiWin program supplied on CD with your Psion machine can help you with most of your conversion needs. If your PC is connected to your Psion, dragging files from "My Psion" to the PC should prompt you to convert to a PC format, otherwise you can convert files that are stored on the PC, using the Psion File Converter. This program is installed with PsiWin and is located in c:\program files\Psion\PsiWin - the application filename is Cpycnv.exe
Psion Revo replacement restore - psiwinconv.jpg For more help on file conversion, see our dedicated conversion page.
Agenda and Contacts databases: Note that these can't be converted using the Psion File Converter - PsiWin supports synchronisation of these files, but not direct conversion. See our suggestions in our Backup FAQ. The most common solution is to load up the files in the Psion Emulator, and either use Print to save the data as a plain text file, or use a Psion-based converter, as detailed on our Conversion page

This device should come with it's own software that you can install on your computer. Softwares like these are capable of backing up and restoring files. After installing, you'll need to back-up the information that you need to transfer from the old psion to the new one. You'll have to do this one step at a time.

1. install old device's software
2. connect old psion and back up all data/information
3. install new device's (Psion Revo Plus replacement) software if a different one is provided.
4 connect the replacement device and then restore all of the data/information from your computer.

This is usually as easy as pie and has steps so simple that even an average computer user can follow.

hope this helps. :)

Is there a way of refurbishing the faded white legends on the keyboard of my Psion 5mx PDA? Or is there a repair company which undertakes such work?

You either need to buy a broken Psion with a good keyboard and replace the keyboard in your machine yourself. Look on Ebay.
The other way would be to trade-in your machine with one of the resellers that deal with Psion machines.
Problem made worse if you live outside the UK.

Hope this helps

I was using my Psion 5mx This evening "Playing the bombs game" when suddenly the game froze. It didn't freeze completely as the game timer was still going and I was able to switch the PDA off. After that...

Unfortuately after taking the machine to my local Psion Teklogix Retailer, I was told that my only solution wast to perform a "Hard Reset" on the machine. Thankfully the PDA still works fine, but my data is all gone. I've managed to restore my data up to July 2009, but the rest I'll have to write off to a learning experience. Needless to say, I'll never play the "Bombs game again". :-)

Psion seems quite dead although the green light and the light on the charger both light up when connected to the mains, but nothing happens on the screen. Tried changing the round battery - no effect at...

You probably already know that all the Psion 3 models had a weakness in the screen ribbon. Some would last for years and others would be lucky to see you through to the first anniversary. There are plenty of way so to get this sorted. If you are not very keen to fix it yourself then best to try and get a replacement from Ebay or a trade in form some of the companies that still deal with these machines.

Psion Netbook and the rain and Windows

If this is the original Psion NetBook (not the Pro) then you are stuck with the OS you have.
I would remove both the OS/RAM DIMM and the extra RAM DIMM if you have it, as well as removing the CF card. Make sure they are all clean and dry. Take the battery off too. You then need to leave the netbook open, with the CF card slot open in an airing cupboard or other warm dry place for 24 hours. Leave the battery in there too.
Once everything appears dry again, put it all back together and it should work. If not, you'll have to send it off for repair. There are still some ex-Psion engineers in the UK doing netbook repairs, have a look on the pdaforums for addresses.
Hope you get it fixed!

Only suggestion here is to try a cold reset. Make sure you have an up-to-date backup. Take all the batteries out and leave for a couple of hours. Re-install batteries and check the Psion. If all looks good, do a restore. If things look bad again, your system was corrupted so reset again but do not do a restore. You will then have to trial-and-error reloading parts of the backup.

I would suggest re-installing any third party software from scratch.

Psion 3c screen cable

this is a problem that i once had. i wrote the company, and they quoted me, i think, about $150 for the repair. i then wrote directly to the manager of customer service, asking if there was any way i could get a more reasonable rate, and they gave me a rma (return merchandise authorization) number, and i sent it in, and they fixed it for free. they even reconditioned it so well, that i thought they had sent me a completely new unti. they replaced the keys, screen and everything, but i knew it was still my old unit, because there was an old scratch barely noticeable on the bottom of the case. i am not saying that you will have the same experience - this was about 13 years ago, when they were still manufacturing the series 3c. now that they have stopped making the unit, you'll probably be referred to a 3rd party company, and you may wind up being at the mercy of whatever rates they want to charge. if you are handy with a soldering iron, you might want to try to repair your self, but the parts involved are so minuature and delicate, that that might be prohibitive. good luck anyhow. also, try ebay or craigslist to look for a replacement unit, which might actually wind up being a lot cheaper than a repair (lol)

Psion 5 fc card

The formatting is supposed to be identical on Psion and PC but in practice they are not. You should never try to repair a CF card on a PC for instance as it messes with the filesystem making it unusable on the Psion. Try to format the card on the Psion if you can, or if possible find or borrow a camera which takes CF cards and use that to format the card - that should do the trick.

HINGE OPERATION - WON'T CLOSE

With your revo closed use a craft knife (or similar thin blade) to prize-off the Revo badge. Under the badge you will find the heads of the wire hinges. Pull out both. The top and bottom **** is then free to slide out a bit. use the sam balde to prize the hinge sliders from the bottom **** (do one side at a time but do not force it. Once the sliders are out you then need to accesss the back of the hinge to release the ribbon cable. Assembly is the reverse of dissasembly. use a lighter to warm up the glue on the revo logo so that it bonds weel with the plastic surface.

Opening Psion 5 files in my PC

You need to transfer them using PsiWin - it will automatically convert the files p[roperly between PC and Psion versions.
You cannot just transfer the files via i.e. the CF card and expect them to work.

I believe versions of AbiWord can read Psion Word Processor files directly but have never tried this myself.
