Hi Wade and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly

Try this quick test before digging to deep. With the door open make sure the light is on... and then depress the light switch plunger and make sure the light goes OFF. If the light does not go off you may have a simple door switch problem. If the compressor is running the fan is supposed to be running. The only thing that would turn off the fan is... door switch, temp control or unit in defrost. Ahem or ICE build up. Ice will stop an evaporator fan in about 5 days (longer for freezers) if there is an automatic defrost problem where the unit never cycles into the defrost mode. If the Evaporators coils are blocked with ICE do a manual defrost with and external fan directing air into the unit for over 2 hours with the contents removed and the unit unplugged. When you restart the unit.. listen for the evaporator fan running. If the Fan runs you know it was.... ICE. I.e your probably dealing with an automatic defrost problem. Timer, heater or wiring near either one.
Using the temp control will shut off the compressor and the fan(s) but not the light. Look around on the side of the chassis near the compressor or the opposite side of the chassis for a 4" x 5" data packet. There should be a tech sheet and wiring diagram in that envelope. (
Just me thinking here.... no one got into the freezer and moved wires in your absence... so the wiring should be connected correctly.

Also the condenser fan is supposed to run anytime the compressor runs unless yours has external coils.
I do not have your units wiring diagram and I am not in this for the money... I just wanted to pass on a bit of info that may hopefully help you right now. Feel free to shop for another expert. No worries here.
Thanks for choosing FixYa,

I have a Westinghouse upright freezer FJ383M-R. The red light was on bright and the top half of freezer was not working. Turns out it was a switch that turns the defrost cycle on was faulty. Serveman replaced borken part. Now it is fine. Was much cheaper than replacing freezer.

My Westinghouse Freestyle Freezer FJ383 wobbles on the floor. How do I fix?

There are feet on each coner that can be turned to make them go up or down. you may need a person to slightly lift or tilt the unit and a pair of strong pliers to get the feet turning.

ne of the most common reasons for the freezer to start failing is called "frost free failure." Ice can build up on the evaporator coils over time, and this ice builds up until it starts blocking the fan. The fan is responsible for circulating cold air throughout the freezer, so if it is blocked the freezer will not be able to freeze any food. You can usually check this by removing an access panel in the back of the freezer to inspect the coils. If ice is built up on the coils, a hairdryer can assist in defrosting them

I have a westinghouse upright/vertical freezer, the alarm light came on a couple of days ago. We pulled it out and found a chewed through wire which we repaired. Now the freezer is tripping the power off...

You have a short circuit. Start by checking your wire repair (after unplugging the freezer of course!). Make sure that the two wires cannot touch each other and are not crossed. If you or a friend has an electrical test meter and knows how to check for short circuits, this is the time to do so.

If your repair is good, look carefully for more chewed wires. A pair may have been chewed through and are touching, or one conductor may be in contact with bare metal on your freezer.

With an electrical test meter, you can set it to OHMS and check between either side of the plug and a bare metal part on the freezer. Only the grounding pin on the plug should read a low resistance to a bare metal part. If either of the other pins on the plug read a low resistance, follow back to find the short.

If you do not have a meter around and cannot find somebody with one, you will need to call in a technician to look at it. If you have to do this, make sure you get an estimate before they do any work. Good Luck!

Westinghouse fridge thermostate replacement

Without drawing a diagram, and assuming you have the controller, you need to do two things: Power the controller by finding a wire pair in the fridge that is always hot, and finding the wire that the resident thermostat uses to interrupt the operation of the compressor. This thermostat is usually located behind a panel in the top part of the refrigerator section and has a bulb that resides in the freezer. . Your controller should have an on and off range; that is, it should cut the fridge on at, say 61, and cut back off at, say, 60. You'll need some kind of range, thereby giving the compressor some "off time" of more than a couple of minutes. If you don't do this, you will reck the compressor, or it simply won't start. (Refrigeration systems need to equalize so that the compressor motor won't have to start when the pressure is really high. At equal pressure between evaporator and condensor, the motor can start easily.) . You have quite a project ahead of you. I suggest when you get into the nitty gritty of it, enlist your neighborhood MacGyver type. It shouldn't be that hard to pull off this project.
