My 2g iphone isnt being recongised by my laptop it says USB not recognised. The cable works with other Ipods and I can only charge the phone via electricity when its turned off.

to isolate if there's something wrong with the laptop, try to plug in other usb devices on all of the usb ports. if other devices works, then you need to reinstall Itunes on your computer and get the latest version. and of course, Iphones only work on USB 2.0 ports.
