The 'Mode' button on my Minolta 400si doesn't work, so I can't change the settings for the subject program mode or the creative exposure mode. What should I do to fix it?

This is usually due to contaminants on the contacts in the wheel or an electronic failure commonly associated with these mechanisms. This can be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

My name is Rick and I'm a professional repair technician with over 20 years in the business and have repaired many of these. I'm semi retired and work from home with little overhead so I can keep repair costs low. If you decide to have the camera repaired, please click HERE for a directory listing that suits your needs.

I have a Nikon N60 35mm camera its displaying F3 3 in the viewfinder what does it mean and how do I fix it

It's not clear from your question that this is actually a problem as you haven't said what the display is doing to cause you problems actually using the camera.

What is certain is that it's supposed to display a F number in the viewfinder. Along the bottom of the display will be a number (shutter speed), an F number (aperture setting, when in auto or shutter priority modes this may not exactly match what's set on the lens), and moving bar + - scale too indicate over (+) or under (-) exposure.

If you really don't know what the F number is nor what it's for then you need to read both a good photography for beginners guide and also the camera manual. Explaining the relationship between shutter speeds, aperture settings and film speeds in any truly meaningful way here is beyond the limited scope of FixYa as whole books are devoted to the subject, but you only need a few pages and pictures from the available publications to get a good idea.

You can download a free user guide for your camera at the address below. It's for a Nikon F60, but it's identical to the your camera which was called the N60 in North America to distinguish it from unofficial imports.

I hope that I've helped and if so ask only that you return the favour by rating my answer. If I haven't helped then please add a comment to explain more about your problem and I'll try to give further assistance. Please note that I'm in the UK and will be unavailable for most of Sunday so please allow for the time difference and scheduling whilst awaiting any further replies from me.

vickiep24,
Since you didn't mention anything about shooting in manual settings I'm going to guess you have been and the camera work there in shutter or aperture mode, so make sure you set your lens's F-stop back to the auto position - check the dot on the lens ring with the f-stop numbers (usually in red) like the f-22 make sure they are aligned when in auto so when the camera needs more light and the lens can fully open to give it the light it is asking for, then it will shoot otherwise it won't. Does that make sense.

New response to night shots

Hey matty reps,
The numbers you are seeing represent the size of the aperture. The smaller the number you set the camera to the larger the opening in the lens that lets light thru, and the larger the number is the smaller the opening is. The closer you are to your subject the smaller aperture you can use (larger#'s) because you will need less light from the flash to reach the sensor, and the farther away you are from your subject the larger the aperture (smaller#'s) you will need to use. I hope this helps!

Sincerely,
Allan
