Question about Craftsman 17.5 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model
The engine starts fine, but when I try to disengage the clutch or try to engage the blades, the engine shuts off. The problem appears to be electrical in nature. Possibly a short?
Deffinatly the seat switch if the wires are green you can cut one if they are black you can tie them together this will bypass the switch for testing only

The Oddest has it right! Usually these problems fall under "electrical", and in this case, the kill switches. Usually always the same, you have the generic 3 (sometimes more), and with each brand, they are different, in different PLACES, but do the exact same thing:
Grounding the electrical, to kill it (when open), and allowing it to run (when closed), or vice versa! What Oddest suggested applies to ANY riding mower, the only difference is WHERE they are, and HOW MANY and HOW they open/close.
Gotta love technical engineering simplicity at its' finest!

Try checking out where these parts connect. There is usually a switch that must connect in order for the particular item to work correctly, i.e. the seat, when sat on, provides a complete connection in order for the lawnmower to run. Sometimes, all you need to do is clean the contacts, and double check the wiring to it, to make sure these are secure or not eaten through. You can use a shot of WD-40 to clean these and it should be fine.
