the problem might be your cd drive. the lens may be broken. I suggest you go to a technician and convert your ps2 to harddrive. it loads games much faster and you wont need cd to play games.
also if you want to play games using psp slim here are some tutorials on how to do that.

hope it helps.
i have the same problem, used to work fine now it doesn't and i've bought 4 copies of the game! gt4 is one of a few games that are on a dual layered disc, witch is why other games work but gt4 don't, so you would natraly think the problem lies in the game disc itself. ive been on the phone to sony and acording to them its because the drivers in my system are knacked. for £50 they will come to my house and take my ps2, and replace it wiv one they have referbushed. kinda steep when i could go to game station and buy one for £20 and still get to keep my console. aprently this problem is more common on the slimline consoles. what do you have? i have a slimline SCPH-70003 witch ive owned from new and taken good care of. its anoying cos out of the 80 something games i have, my favriout, gt4, is the only one the wont work!
If the DVD you are buying is original then it will just work on your ps2 that is also not downgraded. But if the DVD you bought is downgraded and your PS2 is not then it won't work. look for a technician who can downgrade your ps2 to read pirated copy of games. In philippines, we don't buy original copies, we just download it from the internet and burn it to a dvd. At the same time we downgrade our PS2
If you are in North America, you PS2 will not play PAL formatted disks. (NTSC is what is used here). You would need a modded PS2 to play the game. If you can get your money back, I would recommend that. If not, then you might want to try to sell it on eBay.
