My Macbook computer will not start up once it gets to the light blue screen it has a file/ folder with a question mark

It sounds like your system has corrupted. Put your instal disk in. Start your mac up and hold down the c key. Once it has started check that the hard drive exists by go to the menu bar and selecting the disk utility. If the hard drive shows it means that it is okay. Then run the disk utility check drive and then run the repair permissions. You can then try restarting, if it works then you are back up and running again. If it does not you will need to reinstal your system. You do this by starting up with the instal disk holding down the c key and run the instal script. To keep your hard drive contents you MUST use the preserve users instal which will come up as an option. Do not reformat the hard drive as this will wipe all your information.

If you have been running time machine as your backup operation you could instal a totally clean system and then select the time machine backup once the new system has been laid down using the migration utility in the utilities folder within the applications folder.

If your hard drive does not show up the hard drive is probably a goner and you will have to purchase a new hard drive and instal a fresh system.

Hope this helps

How do you reset an apple macbook laptop

Don't worry just follow the below steps and you will be able to fix your problem
1
Back up your information to an external medium such as an external hard drive or a flash drive. The install process allows you to transfer current files to a fresh operating system (OS) install, but it is always best to be prepared with a backup of your files in case something goes wrong.

2
Insert the first install CD or DVD of the operating system software.

3
Restart your Mac Book or Mac Book Pro. Immediately hold down the "C" key as the computer reboots. This will cause your Mac Book to boot from the CD or DVD you inserted.

4
See the "Welcome" dialog that asks you to pick a language. It may also ask you to agree to the terms and conditions of the software install. Depending upon which OS version you are using, you might see the software perform several checks on your system. If you do not see this, do not worry.

5
Choose where to install the OS. You're most likely going to select your primary hard drive. If you have one or more partitions on your hard drive, you can select any of them as long as they are large enough.

6
Choose your install. You'll be presented with three options: "Upgrade," "Archive and Install," and "Erase and Install."
Choose "Update" to simply update the current OS install on your Mac Book. All your data, files and programs will remain intact.
Choose "Archive and Install" if you need to back up all the data on your system and import it into a fresh install of the software. You will need to reinstall much of your non-Apple software if you choose this option.
Pick "Erase and Install" if you want to erase everything on your hard drive and install a fresh version of the OS. None of your data will remain if you pick this option. This is effectively a factory reset of your Mac Book, as none of your personal settings or data will remain.

7
Choose the right setting. If you choose "Archive and Install," be sure to check the box to preserve your user and network settings. This will ensure your previous profile data is installed in the new software installation. Once you've chosen an option, select it. Click "OK."

8
Relax. The Apple OS install will take care of everything from this point. You may be prompted along the way with a few questions, but the install should be mostly automatic. When the install is complete, your Mac Book will restart.

9
Restore your data. If you chose "Upgrade" or "Archive and Install," the software will prompt you to migrate your old data to the new system. Follow the instructions to ensure your old settings and programs are transferred to the fresh install of the software.

Thanks.
Have a great day

EMachines ET1810-01 trying to install xp pro on clean hd, cmos does not show hard drive and xp says there is no hd. it is connected. how do i get it to find the hd?

You need to format your hard drive. Set your boot device to cdrom in your bios. Boot using xp cd.DO a reinstall of windows and it should give you the option to format or delete partitions on your hard drive. if that doesnt work try putting the hard drive in another computer to see if it works. Or you can buy a hard drive enclosure that allows you to use your hard drive as an external device.

My 504 got a virus and HD crashed. Should I just get a new HD installed? Who is best to do this? I am not so happy with local computer "experts" so far. Lots of $$ and no good fixes. Ripped off

Its not usual for a virus to cause the heads to crash. Its worth trying the drive in another PC especially if you need to get at the data. If you instal a new HD you will need all the original software disks to be able to set up the machine. That is unless you have a usable backup from something like acronis. If you think there is a virus on the HD then it may also be on your restore points and any backup you have ..these will need cleaning..restore points by deleting them, any backup will require you to use something like malwarebytes, spybot etc...
This machine is quite old now you may want to think about replacing it....rather than fit an new hdd.

The max resolution supported by that LCD HDTV is 1366 x 768. If your screen resolution in XP is set higher than that, you'll run into issues. Reduce your screen resolution first, then run the nVidia multiple display setup.

How do I reformat my 500gb external hard drive for my mac?

Well, you can plug it into your mac, and then open the applications folder on your mac(by opening the Macintosh HD icon first) and opening the utilities folder and selecting Disk Utility. Through disk utility, you can reformat any drive to Mac OS(preferably journaled.) so that you can use it with Time Machine, and the MAC OS.

I have a Western Digital My Book external drive which has been working perfectly. However during an automatic backup yesterday it returned a message that the backup failed and the reason was "system...

That will typically mean that the backup software was trying to backup a file that was deleted sometime between when the initial index of all the files was made and when the actual file was to be backed up. This typically happens with temporary files or files in a browser cache or similar. If you were using your machine at the time of the backup, it is even more likely to occur. I would suggest you look at the log file and see exactly what file(s) wasn't backed up.
