Question about HP Photosmart C4180 All-In-One InkJet Printer

My desktop computer won't let me install my printer

Computer screen froze last night and I tried to shut it down to restart it. Somehow, I hit OK and it kicked out my printer and set the default to some unknown printer. So, I can't print and I really need to!! Please help.

    Hey.. No the problem has not been resolved. My desktop is an old Compaq... I can't find the disks (maybe because this has not happend before and the machine is years old).. so, can you suggest an alternative? Would I need to purchase new disks and follow those directions??

Go to the printer manufacturer's web site and find their support tab, driver tab, and download your particular printers drivers for your particular operating system. If you post back with the make, model, of your printer, along with your pc operating system i can give you more detailed advice. Good Luck!

Have you tried uninstalling the drivers in safe mode ?
You should print these instructions before continuing.
They will not be available after you shut your computer down in step 2.
Click Start and then click Shut Down.
In the drop-down list of the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart, and then click OK.
As your computer restarts but before Windows launches, press F8.
On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press F8 when the boot menu appears.
Use the arrow keys to highlight the appropriate safe mode option, and then press ENTER.
If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access using the arrow keys, and then press ENTER.

If Windows launches before you can choose a safe mode, restart your computer and try again.

mcdevito75 here, Ok, I would shut down the computer and restart, estabish your internet then use the disk for the printer to install in your computer. Hope this helps.

Printer is nat responding to print comands, a message about spooler subsystem popped up when i restarted the conputer.

Somehow, the print spooler of your computer got disabled. Here's how you enable it. Go to Start Menu > click on Run (for XP)/Search (for Vista or Windows 7)> type services.msc then hit Ok. Services window will pop up. Look for Print Spooler in the items (it's arranged alphabetically). Right click on Print Spooler > click on Properties. Printer Spooler Properties window pops up. In General tab, make sure that Startup type should be Automatic and Service Status shoud be Started. Then go to Log On tab, uncheck Allow service to interact with desktop. Hit Apply and then hit Ok to save the settings. If problem is not resolved, place a comment so I can get back to this. Thanks.

Port not recognized - printer and computer do not communicate

unplug printer ,shut down printer, shut down computer, then restart computer, and plug printer back in after computer is fully up and running turn printer back on
and that should solve the problem

Hello batrogirl55, carsandcomps here: May I suggest the following:

You mentioned you didn't think you should unplug the printer. Go into the Contro Panel under the Start Menu (or short cut on desktop if available) and go to Printers. Find your printer in this list (if more than one is intalled on the computer) and click on it. Make sure that it is set as the default printer if it is the only one you use. Once you've established it is the default, cancel all pending, or in progress print jobs if any exist. Now, shut down your computer (or log off/out). Using the Off button on the printer, try to shut if off with that button, just to see if it will shut off. If not, unplug it and wait about 1 minute. If your computer isn't shut down (just logged off) shut it down as well, and wait 30seconds to a minute. This gives the hard drive time to completely shut down. With the printer unplugged, turn your computer on, and let your OS (operating system) completely boot up (wait until all Start Up programs are started and the computer is merely idle--doing nothing). Go to the Start Menu, and go to Windows Update (if windows is your OS). Install any recommended updates if any are available. If not, close the web browser, and go back into the Control Panel and click on Printers again. Right click on the Printer Icon. When the dialogue box appears, go to the bottom of the list, and click on Properties, Advanced, Printing Defaults. Click Okay. Close Control Panel. Restart Computer. Plug in Printer. If a disc came with the printer insert it (after computer has restarted and idle; close any running programs) and run the Setup file. By running the setup file, it should reinstall the driver and necessary files for the printer. It may ask you if you want to "repair" (not necessarily though as each printer setup is unique). Once the installation is complete, try to print again. If this still does not work, then you may have an issue with the printe itself, and may need to have it serviced.

Hi there,
  • Unplug the printer cable from the computer.
  • Unistall the printer drivers from Device manager and also unistall the all the printer appications
  • restart the computer
  • try to download drivers from the website
  • after installing drivers and software it will ask you to connect the printer.
  • then you can connect the printer and and try to Print the test page.

Vista Shuts down with hp officejet j4580

Disable all the startup items and your security software and firewall. Then try installing the printer. If you still have the same problem try installing the printer by connecting to a different USB port. You can also uninstall all the USB port from device manager. restart the computer and then install the printer.

Insert your Lexmark Xx3 Installation CD (disc 1) in your CD-ROM drive. Make sure your computer is on. Once you see the Lexmark Installation screen, click the Install Now button. Wait while files are loaded onto your computer. Click the Next button. Click the Next on the directory window. Click Next on the following screen. If your USB cable is connected to your Lexmark All-In-One product, disconnect it now. Click OK. Wait while the software is installed on your computer. When the next screen appears, connect the USB cable and click OK. The printer should now be installed and ready to use. Already installed the software but it appears the printer driver is not installed To verify the printer driver is not installed follow these steps: Attach the USB and power cable attached to your device Restart your PC Click Start. Click Control Panel. Click Printers and other Hardware if the icon exists. Click Printers and Faxes If your printer does not appear in the list then please follow the remaining instructions below. Unplug the USB cable and power cord from the back of the printer Insert the Lexmark Xx3 CD into your CDROM drive if it is not installed already. If the CD automatically runs, click Cancel. Click Start and select Run. In the Open box, type the letter of your CDROM drive followed by prtsetup.exe. For example: D:\prtsetup.exe and click OK. A Lexmark License Agreement will appear, click Accept. A progress bar with the percentage of files copied will be displayed. Next a communication error will appear, click Cancel on this message. A printer registration screen will appear, click cancel or exit. Click Start and choose Shut Down. In the Shut Down window select Restart. While the computer is restarting reconnect the USB and power cables and power the printer on. Once the computer has restarted Windows should detect the printer. if still it is not working try with another usb cable
