Vertical line in middle of screen

My uncle handed this plasma TV to me as he was clearing out his house of "old electronics", I guess you could say..

I've tried going through all of the menu screen settings in an attempt to remove the black line. Tilting it at other angles does not work either (Sorry if that sounded silly.)

I want to avoid spending +$1000 in repairs for this set but it looks like that might be the case anyway....unless someone has a different solution?

Black bar appears to be in the menu as well.

  • iiistereoiii Sep 17, 2008

Could I sell it for parts?

If so, what would be a reasonable price range?

  • iiistereoiii Sep 17, 2008

Well, before I sell it, I just now thought about asking my uncle if I could borrow parts from his 5 other broken plasmas. From what I recall, all I know is that he picked up most of them from Katrina damages back in 2005.

That's if he has a replacement 42 inch screen anyway...

    $150-$250 sounds very decent though.

That's a plasma TV so there should be no bad LCD in that.

Fortunately, that's an easy problem to fix. Vertical black lines on a plasma screen are usually just an indication of some bad circuit boards that can be fixed with by re-soldering the bad joints. You can watch how to do it on this plasma TV repair site.

Hope this helps!

Try changing the tv mode to video 2 or 3 (any video input with nothing attached). If the line remains even with no picture being sent to the TV, then it's a bad LCD, and will need repairs. Maybe you can post a picture with your digital camera so we can see what it looks like.

Owch...That is definitely a bad LCD screen, and will take some serious repairs to fix. Either learn to live with it, or try and get it repaired. However, repairs will be very costly.

Sure, it can be sold for parts. I would think a tv supply store would buy it from ebay for 150-250 dollars, and they'd pay shipping.

Just make sure that you replace it with the exact same lcd monitor, from a same exact model numbered LCD.

Also, don't forget to vote if my advice was useful :-)

ON THE BOTTOM ON THE INSIDE THERE ARE 2 THIN BOARDS CALLED C BOARDS. THEY HAVE CONNECTORS THAT MAY BE LOOSE THAT CONNECT TO FLEX CABLES THAT CONNECT TO THE SCREEN. BE SURE TO DISCONNECT THE POWER BOARD FROM THE TWO SUS BOARDS ON THE SIDES BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO MESS WITH THESE CONNECTORS. THE CHARGE STORED IN THE POWER BOARD WILL ARC AND BURN THE FLEX CABLES. THE CONNECTOR BELOW THE STRIP IS SUSPECT. IF THAT DOES NOT FIX IT THEN C BOARD IS BAD OR THE PANEL IS BAD.

Hi = My LG5010 has developed vertical lines on the right hand side - if I move the screen backwards and forwards, the lines go away, but as soon the TV is switched off and on again, the lines come back. ...

The problem is most definately the LVDS cable that goes from the Main board to the Tcon board. The main board is the large one in the middle of the set and the t-con board is at the top- middle of the set. The connector is a long skinny plug with usually 20-25 pins. The connector can be unpluged (carefully) and cleaned with alcohol and a q-tip. There is NO VERTICAL Chip in any LCD or Plasma sets. Vertical circuits of that design have been gone since the inception of DLP, LCD and Plasma sets. The last analog set rolled off the line in 2005.

Green vertical line on videocon 42inch plasma tv

Hello Depending how wide the line is their could be two possible causes.
I have two questions for you.
1. How wide is the line.
2. Does it run from top of screen to bottom of screen?
If the line is thin a single strait line then it is possible the PDP has gone Bad (Panel). (Screen). The screen will to be replaced.
If the line is at least 2 or more inches wide then its a buffer board which can be replaced. LG calls this board Hand insert Boards or display driver boards..

50" LG Plasma - Thin red vertical line in middle of screen

I work for a auth LG service center and each time I have had this symptom we had to either change what called the T_CON control board or the Plasma display panel itself. You need to cocntact LG @ 800-253-0000 report your problem and they will find a service center in your area you should have 1 year warranty parts and labor.

Black line in center of screen

These black lines on the plasma screens are very fixable.  There is a dry solder joint on a circuit board at the bottom of the plasma that needs resoldered.  There are 6 or 7 "ribbons" along the bottom of the screen that correspond to vertical sections of the display, so you just follow the black vertical line down to figure out which one is faulty.  I just performed this fix successfully on my first attempt on a Gateway plasma, but it will work on most plasma's, specifically Hitachi, gateway, LG, Hyundai, & Akai. I think they may all have LG boards, my gateway did.
I can't really describe very well what to do, but I assure you it is fixable.  If anyone is near nashville, I might be able to help you out.  My email is tomp2000@juno.com.
thanks,
ST
