My hp computer shuts down unexpectedly - PC Desktops

my HP dc5000 shuts down unexpectantly. At times this will occur after running for about 10mins and other times it will shut down immediately after boot-up. Recently had new RAM installed when it would not power-up at all, it would just flash lights and beep. The new RAM fixed that problem, but it has been shutting down, as if someone cut the power off, on its own ever since. Could it be the RAM causing this?

The most common reason behind this type of behavior is a failing hard drive. When a Hard drive is failing it causes corruption in the filing system used by your operating system. if this is the case, its is recommended that you backup all your data as soon as possible.

Though this is the most common reason, by no means is this the only reason. It could be caused by the following:

  • Corrupt Operating System
  • Bad RAM
  • Bad Power Supply
  • Case Short
These are just a few of a possibilities. You will have to be a little more specific as to its behavior before and/or after your unit unexpectedly turns off.

My HP DC 5800 PC, Shut down unexpectedly. It is not happen regulerly. Some times it happen twice a day and some times it happen once a month. My operating system is Vista business.

Most unexpected shut downs like this are caused by over heating. Is the computer in a closed in space? If so try moving it to where it has plenty of room to breath. If this does not help I would suggest trying to replace the current fans to be sure that they are in working order.

Computer shuts down unexpectedly

Your Computer is overheating and is shutting down to protect it's self from damage. Your Computer needs to be serviced/cleaned of any and all dust. Pay special attention to the CPU cooler and graphics card. Install as many fans as possible.

Melting plastic smell/ computer slow and shuts down after about 15mins

Hi there.
The reason you can smell burning plastic and why its shutting down after a short time is because its overheating. This can be caused by a build up of dust on the CPU fan, overtime with dust build up computers struggle to keep themselves cool and tend to shut down unexpectedly, chances are this is the problem with your machine, my advice would be to remove the power cord, open the side panel of the computer and clean all the dust away from inside the tower, do this with a soft, clean paintbrush making sure you remove the dust carefully and gently, also make sure the CPU fan and the heat sync behind it is completely free of dust or any other foreign objects.
Once you are happy that its clear of dust, close or return the side panel, plug in the power cord and turn the PC on, you may find that the PC will stay on for longer with the smell dramatically reduced.

Please post back with the results and thanks for using FixYa!!
