My laptop suddenly shut off

Did it shut off or is the display not working? If you can hear the hard drive, fan etc. running and the indicator lights are still on then your display may be going bad or shot.

Immediately run the PSA test. Leave laptop off. Press and hold on the Fn key the press power button at the same time. Lest PSA test finish the quick test and determine if HDD is faulty.

If HDD is good no errors found then reinstalled the OS. If HDD is faulty then replace.

My laptop keeps shutting down at random times. I

Computers may not be smarter than people, but if they’re designed properly, they will shut themselves down before overheating to the extent that they do themselves damage.

If the smart person keeps turning the notebook back on and figures out a way to foil the protection, the laptop is probably doomed. Once a laptop shuts down for thermal event protection, it may refuse to power back up for a fixed period of time, five or ten minutes, or it may begin to boot and shut down immediately as soon as it boots to the point that it can figure out that its too hot.

The over-temperature protection is generally a BIOS rather than an operating system function, so one sign of an overheated laptop is one that shuts itself down while you’re using it and then refuses to boot as far as the operating system unless you leave it alone for an hour or so to cool down.

Unless you’ve been working in a very unfriendly environment, high temperatures, direct sunlight, etc, you should take even a single overheating shutdown as a warning to back up your data at the first opportunity and to give the cooling system a serious cleaning.
Good luck

I had to shut my computer down, and tried to start up again and it won't. I can't even get any screen display. You can hear it starting, see the hard drive indicator light start, then stop suddenly. It is...

it might be a screen problem or a processor problem or a ram problem, try reseating your rand and processor, if that doesnt work then connect a external display to it and switch the output to it

Toshiba Satellite Goes completley off! Black screen, NO POWER!

Hi Steven, in my experience as a tech support agent, it seems that you're having an issue with your hard drive, sometimes it might also be an overheating issue, to be clear on that, please be sure to check the temperature of the computer when it shuts down, then the first symptom of the issue seems to be the clicking sound which ussually comes from the hard drive's reading head, this might indicate the hard drive is damaged and that it cannot perform as usual. The steps to troubleshoot the issue will be as follows; First please enter the BIOS/ System Setup of the system, by pressing the [Delete] as soon as the computer turns on several times, you will appear in a black or blue enviroment with some information from your computer. Check if the issue will happen there as well. Second, if the computer gets really hot at the point when it shuts down, please ensure that all the fans in the computer are running (you should be able to hear them), And be sure of the temperature when it shuts down, we must know if the computer is too hot to touch, or there is no problem with it. Third step, how long will the computer stay on? Will it always shut down at the same time?
The best solution for this issue would be to replace the hard drive, or defective fans depending on the troubleshooting results, if you're still within your 1 year warranty with Toshiba, you should contact their tech support team to replace the part.

As an aditional step to the troubleshooting you should also try to remove the hard drive, and let the computer on for as long as its necessary, to discard the hard drive from the issue, if it doesn't shut down then the hard drive seems to be the problem.

PROBLEM WITH MY SATELLITE M35X-S111

Check to see if your Display is bad or Video is bad..
To Do This....
Plug an External Monitor into the laptop serial port..Boot the laptop and use the function key plus F5 to boot to external screen... If you see your PC running on the external screen it is a Video card/chip problem.....

Do your lights run ..the Power Light/Battery light/ hard drive light??? Do you hear the hard drive spinning??

Sounds like the incorrect RAM (SUPPORTS PC2100 AND PC2700 DDR SDRAM SODIMMs) for that laptop. Also try re-seating the RAM in the socket and that is not installed backwards (hard to do , but I've seen it)
