Powermate coleman 5000 gen. with subaru engine

I bought it brand new about a year and 1/2 ago. about six months ago i put gas in it. it would not crank. switch is set to on. choked it, opened up ,still would not crank. took cover off breather and romoved filter and sprayed a little starter fluid. it started and ran only when i continued to spray starter fluid. then it would die when i quit, today i removed the carb and bowl and cleaned it with gas and put it all back together. now i cranked it with full choke and it would crank for a second, then i open the choke, it would die, would not stay running on choke either. but after taking off carb. i could crank it , but before that it wouldnt crank at all. any info would really be helpful. thanks, troy - houston texas home of ike

  • tb2830 Sep 17, 2008

    just the carb. im not sure which screw is which. one screw is kinda flat with a screwdriver slot and one is raise like a knob. i noticed the flat one has an arrow and it is matched up to the arrow on the carb body. the raised one looks like it only turns so far the it looks like it has a stopping point

  • tb2830 Sep 17, 2008

Hi,

If I may add....
Offhand and assuming you are leaning to a complete DIY (do-it-yourself), perhaps leave the air adjustment and the idle screws as they are. Without knowing the proper settings, it is possible to compound the problem. The air adjustment would affect the air/fuel mixture making it either lean or rich and in most likelihood further adjustments would not correct the issue. Same goes for the idle adjustment. It has been preset to run the engine at a specific RPM that is to maintain the frequency (Hz/cps) of the gen's output.

The issue seems just one, no fuel getting into the combustion chamber from the carbs. Pls try:

  • Verify that the carbs is getting fuel (fresh not the old/stale). Often they have a bleed screw at the bottom for draining the contents of the bowl;
  • use a carb/injector cleaner, though the correct procedure would be to overhaul the carb itself;
  • choke the throat opening (after removing the air filter and the base plate. Use your palm and cover the throat opening while starting/cranking. If your palm gets wet with fuel, then fuel is now entering, if not, then any of the jets are clogged. Spray again with cleaner to melt the gummed ups old gas residue;
  • continuously do the palm choking until fresh clean gas is drawn.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

The is mixture screws on the carb u have to have the fuel and air ratio perfect the best thing to do is screw the fuel in so its not getting to much but make sure not to little and the air out so it breathes then try to start it if it goes it will run ruff wait till it warms up and then adjust again
also i want you to check if the fuel lines are not blocked from sitting to long and the filter is free of dirt and not blocked
now here is a carby same as yours nearly but same set up look at the left of the carb see the first screw on a diagonal now the one behind that is what you want to adjust in and try bit by bit then if no good out and try again repeat if no go give me a yell back http://www.chads-minitruck-parts.com/subaru%20carb.JPG

Yes that could definitely be a problem. Do you still have the manual for it? Also is the unit still under warranty?
Thanks,
Lee

    The warranty is 3 years on the engine and 2 years on the warranty. Where did you purchase the unit as you may be able to have it serviced for quite cheap under warranty. If you still need assistance let me know.
    Thanks,
    Lee

    How is the warranty out? If you only bought it a year and a half ago and it has a 3 year warranty? If you reconsider your rating I hope you will accept and rate accordingly as you should find my information at least helpful. I can assist you in either having to bring it to where you purchased it, if they don't handle warranty claims. Then you I can assist you in contact the nearest authorized service center.
    Thanks,
    Lee

    Though the engine is a separate warranty though the engine manufacturer it also has a 2 year warranty on the unit through coleman.For warranty service: Call toll free 800-445-1805.

    Then you will most likely want to call that toll free number and inquire about warranty service as you should not be having these problems with this new of a unit. Being that the unit is still under warranty this is your best option. Please reconsider the rating and accept and rate my solution accordingly.

    Thanks again,
    Lee

The dirt in the gas settled onto the bottom, try mixing it up or putting some fresh gas in and taking the old out and let me know how that works

Looking for manual for generator...won't start

I had the exact same problem. There a few things you need to do first.
1) Make sure the fuel line knob is turned to the Open position; this knob is located under the gas tank.
2) Turn the power switch to on : it is a little red switch located near the pull-handle on the front of the generator. It needs to be on 'I' not on 'O'
3) Turn the choke lever on: it is a little steel lever with an arrow at the tip. Move the lever in the direction the arrow is pointing.
4) Make sure you have gas left in the tank: it may have evaporated or gummed up if you did mix in a fuel stabilizer before putting it away for storage.

If none of these things work , then you carburator may be full of water and gas lines gummed up.
These Gens need to be started up at least once a month to make sure they keep working properly.

Coleman powermate 5000 gen.

I assume it is a hand start genset. The most common problem if it has been sat for a while is rust on the ignition timing flywheel. If you take the pullcord housing off (recoil) then you will see a big flywheel with what can only be described as a big forked prong with a couple of wires on it. This flywheel should be stainless steel and rusts when sat around for a while without use. Its job is to complete the circuit to the spark plug every time the flywheel passes the forked prong at a given spot on the flywheel, the faster the wheel turns the faster the spark hence the engine runs quicker. Clen the rust off with a releasing agent (wd 40) hey presto!!!!!!!!!!!
