Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have just bought a DSL Starter Kit from Actiontec and I am not sure that it will work for my phone service or where I am located at. The store says they will not allow me to return it if I open it,so I want to make sure that it is compatible with my service and my location.

It is highly dependent on which ISP you have. I would recommend calling the ISP's tech support line, and asking them if they support this specific model. I know my old actiontec didn't support my verizon dsl at home.
Otherwise, post your ISP here, and we can google it for you.

the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

I have an actiontec gt704wg wireless router (from my previous Verizon DSL service)...I now have a Netgear CGD24G wireless router with Brighthouse roadrunner service...I want to connect my actiontec router...

unfortunately, no. You would be better off Ebaying the actiontec and getting a dedicated router- the reason is that the only uplink on the actiontec is the dsl port- not ethernet. Theoretically you could mod the firmware to make the wireless an access point only- but it would still have the achilles heel of needing an uplink.

Hello. I bought this modem with wi fi ,dsl router. How to set it to use this modem as a router.I want to connect my pc with lan cord & use wifi connection with my laptop and phones.

Turn DSL-router off.
Turn Actiontec off.
Turn computer off.

Connect:

* telephone-port in wall <--- 4-pin telephone wire --> DSL router

* Ethernet port on DSL-router <-- Ethernet cable --> WAN port on router

* One of the LAN ports on router <-- Ethernet cable --> network-port on your computer.

Turn DSL-router on, and wait for it to fully load, i.e., pattern of lamps becomes repeatable.

Turn Actiontec on, and wait for it to fully load, i.e., pattern of lamps becomes repeatable.

Turn computer on, and boot it.
Click Start
Click Run
Type CMD
Press Enter
Type IPCONFIG
Press Enter
Look for output like: Default Gateway....192.168.123.456
Start Internet Explorer
Type http://192.168.123.456 (or whatever numbers you saw)
Login to your router
Configure the wireless adapter inside the router
(enter an SSID, choose 'WPA' encryption, enter a password)
Disconnect the Ethernet cable from your computer
Click "View Available Wireless Networks",
and select the SSID that you provided.
Enter the password that you provided.

I have a Qwest Actiontec modem that has worked fine until today. Now the DSL light is blinking and the Internet light does not come on. I have rebooted, but no fix. thanks!

If the DSL light is blinking it means that there is no DSL carrier signal to your modem. Check the phone line and make sure you have no open lines and filters are on all the devices hooked up to your phone system except your modem. You can check for an open line by hooking up a phone to the phone line going into your modem and listen for a dial tone.

I have AT&T DSL and want to install an Actiontec 54 mbps wireless

If the modem was pre-programmed for another service, such as Verizon, you will have to plug the modem into a wall and hold in the reset button on the back of the modem until it resets. Then load the AT&T software IF they provided you with such - the walkthrough is actually pretty good. If AT&T did not provide you the Actiontec or the software, you will have to go to Actiontec's website and download the Actiontec Installation Buddy and also follow the directions for downloading the non-proprietary version of the firmware (WARNING: do not update the player's firmware if ATT &T provided you with the Actiontec; the non-proprietary firmware will make the modem useless toward whichever service provided you with the Actiontec). Take note of the numbers taped on a sticker underneath your Actiontec - MAC Address, etc. You may need this information to complete the installation. Also, download the Actiontec manual - it will take you through the process, but it is not going to be easy to follow - know in advance that it is going to take time.

As you go through the Actiontec Installation Buddy process, it will prompt you to do a modem test - make sure the Actiontec is connected to the phone line and to your computer (via an Ethernet cable). It will do a modem test. If the modem test fails the first time, turn the Actiontec OFF, wait 10 seconds, and turn it on again. Try the modem test again - should work.

If AT&T did NOT provide you with the Actiontec, your task is going to be a bit tricky. If AT&T DID provide you with the Actiontec, it might be better to call their technical support for a walkthrough.

Good luck!
