Replace the screen after use This tough plastic cover will protect your Garmin GPSMAP 176 and 176C display. It snaps on and off with a satisfying snug click and will keep your GPS from being damaged while packed.

If that is the case the only option is to look for parts for you unit and replace it yourself.

You can go to www.partstore.com or www.shopjimmy.com and inquire if they have a screen for your unit and you can try to replace it your self.

Service manuals for Garmin are pretty hard to come by. I would suggest inquire with the store where you bought the unit and inquire if they do repairs. Normally they would offer repairs for out of warranty unit.

If the screen is already damage the only thing that can do here is to have the screen replace from the service center, so you can still use this unit...

Hope that helps...............

Hi the screen on my 176c is so dark it can barely be read. I have to turn the light on to see whats going on.Is there any way to restore it to its former glory cheers ......john wainwright. ...

John, the light sensitive IC has failed. This is a small piece of electronic wizardry that adjusts the brightnessdepending on the ambient light. At night is is supposed to add brightnes and in sunlight reduce it

The sign of failure may have been early but you didint notice it. They often turn on ok then suddenly in daylight the screen will darken, turning the unit off and on resets it for a while. however it gets worse as time goes on.. iT is not a DIY and has to be sent back to the manufacturer for correction.

Contact Garmin for a quote before submitting it for repair, you might need a chair to sit on when they give you an answer. Contact the service support in 7 hills NSW 1 800 235 822

Need repair 176C GPS ok using plug power but battery damaged internal batt connection and will not turn on using int batt device is in NY buddy has few bucks & not wanting to buy new

I have done repairs to similar thing, what I have done, is get a "Pack" of batteries, with leads on them, similar to a cordless phone battery, but the same voltage as the ones the GPS uses, now, solder the wires onto the correct terminals. or the circuit board, make sure you rid every trace of corrosion too.Your good to go.

The GPSmap 176c does not turn on. I have put in new batteries and cleaned the metal parts of the battery receptors

Do you use rechargeable batteries? The 176C seems to be extremely picky about the voltage. I had the same problem. Afer changing to non-rechargeable batteries, everything works fine again. Not great for the environment, but for my bearings.

Will not power on

Did you use rechargeable batteries? The Garmin seems to be extremely picky about enough voltage. I had good rechargeables which I use in my foto flashlights, but they did not suffice for the Gamin. Simple non-rechargeable batteries ones solved my problem. Not good for the environment, but for my bearings...

Batteries last only 20 minutes?

NiMH batteries work on less voltage than Alkaline batteries, so the unit thinks the batteries are low when they are just the wrong type, put Alkaline batteries in {and turn off the backlight if possible} and you will get your 8 hours of use.

My 176c is not responding

get the download (updater from garmin website , download it then hook up 176c to computer and run file .if it doesnt go thru hit power and try again if you get the screen under a good light so you can see it will say downloading when this is done your screen will be back to normal .I dont remember if the unit is on when it beeps or off .try both ways if it doesnt work replace batteries as even though your not seeing the screen the unit is still on like i said ; fresh batts and try it and if it doesnt work hold down power key for a second or two and try again. good luck PS garmin doesnt know this i figured it out myself ...bob
