I am using a Toshiba Satellite laptop and my Toshiba 5GB Type II PCMCIA Hard Disk works fine if I plug it in once the laptop has booted up but if I leave it in place after switching off and then re-boot the start-up process just hangs part way through. Is it normal that I should have to remove the drive every time before starting the computer or is there something I can do to sort it out?

You need to get into the machine bios to check these settings, the bios can be entered only at the point just after you first turn the machine on and it is doing system checks on the a Dos screen. Usually if you press delete or escape then this takes you into the bios. Though we think on the toshiba that you may have to boot the machine up and hold down the?Esc? key, then press F1 when you get the check system message. You are then in the BIOS Setup. Have a look around in here and you will find which drive is being used as you bootable disk.
