Question about Garmin GPS Devices

1 Answer

The unit appears to be inaccurate. While driving I am 50 to 100 yards past an intersection before the icon on the screen shows I have reached the intersection. I have updated the software and even did a unit reset but the problem persists.

1) change output pinning. This is an averaging method used for slow speeds. Disable / Enable as applicable.
2) change your datum. Typically, one would use WGS84. Other older yet popular datums include NAD27 and NAD 83.

How do I fix when I touch a key to put in information and it prints a different number or letter than the one touched

Here is a way to recalibrate the touchscreen without having to go through the menus:

If your Nuvi has the problem that when you press one key but another key is highlighted, then either your touchscreen is defective or it is miscalibrated.

For example, pressing the letter "A" on the QWERTY keypad, actually highlights the letter "S" or "Q" or "Z". On the non-QWERTY keypad, this may show up as "B".

Method #1: If you can get to the main menu, press the "wrench/tools" icon and then the "Display" icon. Now press the calibrate screen button and go through the entire procedure of pressing each dot as it appears on the screen until it says "Done".

Method # 2: Follow this procedure if you can't get to the main menu or any menu thereafter.

First, turn the unit OFF.

Nuvi 3xx & 6xx Series: Hold down the on/off power button and don't let go of it.

On the screen it will say "Pre-boot mode"..... keep holding the button down..... after some time you will eventually come to a screen with dots. If the screen says "Loading" and does not go to to the calibration screen with the dots, you will need to connect the Nuvi to a PC with a USB cable and rename the file "GUPDATE.GCD" within the Garmin directory to "GUPDATE.OLD". Once the file has been renamed, repeat the above procedure.

Once you reach the calibration screen, now you can let off of the on/off power button. Go through the entire procedure of pressing each dot as it appears on the screen until it says "Done".

Nuvi 2xx/2xxW Series: Turn the Nuvi off. Place your finger on the upper left-hand corner of the screen and then slide the on/off power switch to the left and hold until you see the calibration screen. Note: Some 2xxW models require the procedure below for the 7xx.

Nuvi 7xx Series: Turn the Nuvi off. Touch the screen anywhere and keep your finger there while moving the on/off switch to left (don't wait for Garmin logo to come up) and then quickly moving the switch the right (lock position). After a short while, you will reach the calibration screen. Go through the entire procedure of pressing each dot as it appears on the screen until it says "Done".

Nuvi 8xx Series: Turn the Nuvi off. Remove the battery from the Nuvi for at least 10 seconds. Press and hold your finger on screen, while putting the battery back in. The Nuvi will boot-up and you should see the text "Pre-boot Mode" appear on the screen. Continue pressing on the screen until pre-boot goes away and the progress bar appears. Now remove your finger. After a short while, you will reach the calibration screen. Go through the entire procedure of pressing each dot as it appears on the screen until it says "Done".

Nuvi 11xx, 12xx, 13xx, 14xx, 16xx, 24xx, 25xx Series: Turn off the Nuvi. Place your finger on the upper left-hand corner of the screen and then push down on the power button to turn the unit on. Release the power button when the Garmin logo appears. Continue to press on the upper left-hand corner of the screen until you see the calibration screen.

Once completed the Nuvi will display Calibration Complete

This will recalibrate your touchscreen to the LCD display.

If this doesn't resolves your problem. then your touchscreen may be defective.

How to have the battery life show on the screen ?

The battery indicator will only show on the screen in the upper right-hand corner of the screen when the unit is NOT connected to an external charger. When the charger is connected, the unit is running off of external power. The unit has to be running on battery power in order to display the battery status icon.

I have lost the bluetooth

The Bluetooth symbol on the bottom left of the screen will not show up unless the unit is linked with a compatible phone and Bluetooth is turned on. When the phone is not connected or the Bluetooth is turned off, you will not see this icon. The same thing goes for the Traffic icon. If you do not have an active traffic receiver connected, the Traffic icon will not show up either.

Instead of addresses can I set the gps to highway numbers as (Route 39).

Hi yes you can but with GPS units its kinda funky for example on my TOMTOM I have to enter US route 59. On my wife's Garmin you have to enter it as Illinois state route 59 and on my moms Magellan it goes in completely different.

Most destinations and even points of interest can be found but it often takes as long as 5 minutes to figure out how to input the info.

An example for instance in my area I have looked up Fox Valley Mall but on Magellans unit it only shows up as Westfield Fox valley, I have lived here 20 years where did the Westfield come from?

Something I have done in the past is select "find intersection" and then enter a street that I know intersects with the Highway I am looking for and then check to see how the GPS recognizes it.

Hope that helps

Vehicle icon next to road on map

Some SatNavs / GPS units have a 'lock to road' option. Go through the manuals / screen menus to see if it has that option and set it on.

Different parts of the screen do different things depending on the mode you're in. When you touch "speed" the trip screen appears as you've already noted. The 'Driving" icon does nothing until you've asked the GPS to take you someplace.

After you enter a route the "speed" icon changes to "arrival" (which will still bring up the trip screen) and the 'driving' icon will change to "Turn In." Touching "Turn In" will bring up a list of turns along with a small portion of the map (showing that particular turn) anytime you've entered a route.

Note you can also press the green banner on top of the map when you have a route set. You'll see a list of just the turns and the distance to each. Touching each of those turn boxes will show you the split screen offered after you touched the "turn in" button.

Cheers
