Heat dissipation from the unit in the same area of the speaker assembly, especially since you stated that the RIGHT speaker was smoked. Similar problems occur with this design flaw with any manufacturer as HP has the same problem with some of their models.

Your heat exhaust is killing the speaker, and I would also bet that your chipset is AMD and not Intel, the latter having solved it's heat dissipationn problems.

A more aggressive heat dissipation solution on the motherboard or redirection of the exhaust past fewer heat sensitive components would be a design goal.

Seems to me the speaker is just plain broken. You'll need a new one, contact your vendor for repairs, or you will have to live with using external speakers/earpieces...

I hope you will get your replacement,
Yannick.

I, personaly, would be inclined to return it to the retailer and show them if local as then you will be satisfied that you will know the cause of the issue.

My built-in laptop speakers are not working on my Gateway M675 Notebook but when I plug my headphones in, I get very little sound out of them. I tried various different sound card drivers already and...

I have found that the wrong drivers will kill the sound, and yes they will conflict with your original sound driver. If this was a recent developement try the system restore to return original setting, not an option! consider reloading the operational system.

My Gateway laptop says my sound device is working properly, but the sound only works if headphones or speakers are plugged into the jack. how do i fix this?

It sound like your headphone jack is the default sound device. Go to control panel > sounds > look at the devices listed. Click on the speakers that have a device connected to them. You may have two selections for speakers, but one may be tied to a sound device and the other to headphones. Highlight the sound device and click on make this device the default sound device and hit apply.
