Question about Barracuda Networks Barracuda Web Filter 410 - firewall Rack-mountable (BYF410A3)

1 Answer

Unit will not resolve DNS

I setup the webfilter. It runs through a Sonicwall firewall. The unit works just fine when its set to a non-active monitoring mode - I can see all traffic in the log... The moment I set it to active, no one can resolve DNS. I have tried internal DNS, External Servers and pointing to the firewall and no luck. I have put in static routes pointing to the internal DNS and a blanket route for all IPs and nothing. I have tried with transparent mode off and on and still same issue. Anyone have any ideas?

Ditch the Barracuda and use the SonicWall Content Filtering option, it's cheaper anyhow.

Barring that, reset it to default, and make sure that it is using the SonicWall as its gateway, along with the proper DNS settings. Also, check for a firmware upgrade on the unit. I've run into a few Barracudas that have nothign in the knowledge base but a firmware upgrade fixes them.

hello, is your server 2003 setup as DNS server??? if so have you configured forwarder for non- local access? is that a home? or business? is it work do you not have a static public IP address.

here whats happening, when you manually give client the DNS they can resolve everything local fine but when a request for outside world is sent your server doesn't know what to do with it. log on to server open up your dns console, right click on your domain, then select properties, find forwarder tab and add a any reliable public DNS server there ( ie I use 4.2.2.1 (att)) server pretty quick and reliable.
so next time a request is sent to your server and server doesn't have that information it forward that to the public DNS and you will be good to go.

but from your setup i am gathering there is plently you do to improve your network and reduce your headache of manual work.

typical setup: 1- setup DNS with forwarder
2- Setup DHCP on Server instead of router ( trust me its easier than you think)
3- put all setting to for clients in DHCP options
4- reserve IPs for servers/prineters/switches etc.
5- set all clients for DHCP
6-disable DHCP on router.

let me know if your need help setting it up.

i hope this helps
good luck

If your camera is connected to DVR then do the port redirection on your firewall so that you shall view the cameras from internet, If your camera is directly connected to network using RJ45 simply do the port redirection to IP address of CCTV camera.

How to configure Sonicwall TZ 190? I have connected console to the Sonicwall and trying to open it via Console. But no configuration or prompt is coming. Kindly help ASAP.

open control panel and then add printers and other hardware, then up in left hand menu go to system then hardware, device managed and check if your driver is updated. if it says it's working properly then uninstall it and it'll pop back up reinstall then it should work fine.

Can not connect to PPPOE DSL

Is there a reason why the Sonicwall needs to do the PPPOE auth? You should be able to let the modem do the PPPOE connection and have the Sonicwall behind it. The Sonic wall will get a private IP address. Andy
