My son's xbox started freezing and when taking the disk out, the disk would not stop turning. Now, it won't accept any disk. He does NOT have the 3 lights. What might be the problem? It is not under warranty, and I don't want to send it back to Microsoft if I can help it. Anything you can say/do would be greatly appreciated.

From my experience, the problems mostly lie within the Benq drive. You can find which drive you have without dismantling your xbox here.
The only real solution is to take it to your nearest DVD- Video Rental Store, or store that has a Disk Polishing Machine. The scratches are where the laser head, has scuffed the Disk. Therefore normal Polishing Won,t Work.
The disk needs to be resurfaced.
Heat needs to be removed from your xbox for it to function
properly. If you are starting to see random lockups and odd artifacts in
graphics it may be time to clean out your console. Keep in mind that in
game lockups can also be caused by DVD issues but if can stick your xbox in a
cold place and notice that this gives you stable play time then clean it of all dust. I am talking about taking it apart and giving it a good cleaning. If this does not help try a aftermarket fan.
DVD Drive failure most common problem, this ranges from dirty disk error (DDE) message to inoperable drive door, skipping in movies, slow load time or no load or the call customer service errors 10, 11, and 12. To replace the drive it will have to be reflashed.
I got this for my son for christmas along with a xbox 360 60gig. Before he could play the game, it said that the system needed to be updated in order to play fable II. Have you tried updating the system?
My son had a smiliar paroblem, and I bougt him an aftermarket system cooler. It has three/4 fans, and mounts to the reqar of the unit where the power supply plugs in. He has not had one single problem with it since!
Dont worry. All this is, is your son must of tipped over his Xbox 360 console or he moved it, while it was on. In the Xbox 360 there is a default in which the thing that holds the cd and reads it is lose and falls onto the cd and scratches the disk, thats why it is a perfect circle. It happend to me the first day i got the Xbox 360. And also keep the Xbox laid down, it keeps it safer from tipping over and prevents it from scratching it again. Go to the store you bought the game from and you should be able to get a new one. My store gave me ea skate back. Show them your receipt. If they dont accept it, you have to call microsoft and send in that game and they send you a new one in the case.
