For the past couple of months, every time I play a DVD, this big white (transparent) square shows up in the middle of the screen. It takes up the majority of the screen. This happens whether the DVD in is my DVD player or in the Playstation 3. What can I do?

You have a very Technical problem with this TV.
you may have 2 big problems, ballast and dmd.
but it could be something else. If you decide to repair it, honestly you will spend more than 300dlls on it, if you like to, go to fixyourdlp.com
Good Day, amchel2;
It sounds like the 'DVD" player may be the source of your concern, and not the TV. Try using a different disc or input to the TV, if different input and okay then bad TV input. If different disc then okay, then bad disc. IF no,no on both then bad DVD player.
Good Luck, big IRISH.
The best picture you can get ryanvo2 depends on the use of the TV's input capabilities. It also depends on the games outputs.
In today's world of electronics there are more options than in the past, so it depends on the age of your equipment.
So, let's look at the most five (5) options available; number (1)one being the worst and (5) five being the best:
1.) RF, radio frequency, direct cable or antenna input.
2.) Video input; yellow, red and white cables.
3.) S-Video input, some units may require additional audio cables.
4.) Composite Video, red, green & blue cables.
5.) THE BEST 'HDMI' cable, computer type.
ryanvo2 I hope this was helpful. I hope you have years of game playing enjoyment in front of you.
Good Luck, Big Irish
Try doing the same thing to cable/sat box. If to no avail call your signal provider, or possible your TV is experiencing a convergence problem, if picture is concave. Does it do the same thing when you play tape/dvd?? If it does it's the TV, if not the signal source.
This sound like a problem with the Closed Caption, on many sets if the C.C. is set to text a black box apears, and since it only happens on DVD you might look at the DVD menu and see if it has this Text featcher in the Closed Caption menu and turn it off
Information as to the type of signal input is needed to resolve this problem. Does it appear in
zoom mode when playing a dvd, or just in catv mode? Some times an HD cable box must be reset to
a particular aspect ratio. This can be done by reading the owners manual of the cable box manufacturer. Scrivitron
