Kirby G4D vacuum

When I plug the vacuum in it does on turn on when I hit the on/off switch. Can you tell me what the problem is? How can I fix it? Hello, I have a G4 Kirby, which I dismantled for cleaning,no problem with the dismantling or reassembly, but now it will not run, it worked before I started work on it, is there anyway I can test the switch while it is out of the machine.
I can't think of anything that I have done to cause the problem, I am motor engineer by trade so have some knowledge of the workings of the Kirby.
I have power to the Kirby two pin plug, the peg on the brush head is engauged with the front switch, and the side emptor switch is also pushed forward, and I have operated the main switch from the inside with the top cover removed, hope you can help,
Regards, Bill

You have looked into various facts since you are motor engineer

So there can be two problems

  • It Could be the a/c cord, a problem with the noozle not pushing the safety switch, the bag emptor (bottom of outer bag) isn't on the of the way and not engaging the other safety switch

  • Common fault is the mains lead broken internally, unplug from the side of the machine after removing the little cover where the wire goes in. You can use a kettle lead to test the hoover.
If this does not cure it most likely the motor brushes are worn.

Thanks for using Fixya

a continuity tester would help you trace your problem. just follow the wire from the power cord to the motor leads.

    tnx again,

Model G4D. Drive wheels run in reverse, not forward. If you tighten the 3 torx head screws on the bottom, the wheels don't turn at all.

it means you had a problem with the allignment or the screws has a different thigthness then check the wheels allignment check the starting capacitor maybe it is damage allready replace it.

Suddenly my kirby g4d is bowing air instead of sucking the air..what do I do

This is usually caused by a plugged lower bag housing. When the machine is turned on, the bag should expand quickly and firmly. If it does not, remove the bag assembly by turning the housing couterclockwise to remove it from the motor unit, and check for debris.

Will not turn on when I hit on switch. I have checked safety switch where head attaches but it doesn't seem to be a problem there.

Check fuse in the plug or better still if you have and can use multimeter check voltage present @ switch

Kirby G4D belt change . haven't changed the belt in years ! not sure who it goes on, or around the the spool housing ??

Changing belt on Kirby is a bit complicated. Kirby Co. just did not make it easy for their customers. You have to be careful when installing the brush roll back. Brush roll end caps have to be put back a certain way. For detailed instructions with pictures go HERE.

Good Luck,
