Try to reinstall your burning software or try to use Nero or alcohol

I have 123 DVD Copy Gold and have downloaded the plug in. It takes about 25 minutes for the first step of a dvd copy, but then 3 - 5 hours for "encoding". Is there a setting that would speed this up?

You don't specify the build of your PC, so I don't know if it's fast enough, however the software makers do have some help on their website.
By all means try different settings to see if the time reduces, you will have to complete one to see if the quality is acceptable to you.
Have you tried any other software?
Try another product with a free trial or some other free software to see if there is an improvement, that will help isolate whether your PC is fast enough.

Please see here first to see if this cures your problem (personally I think it unlikely it will)
DVD Burner Problems Slow DVD Burning Solutions 123 Copy DVD
If you are experiencing extremely slow burn times this can be caused by other media burning/copying/creation software installing drivers that interfere with 123 Copy DVD and other software. Please try the following - of note any software that installed these filters/drivers will not function after removing them:
  1. Download and install ImgBurn from the following link: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
  2. From the menu click Tools and then Filter Drive Load Order.
  3. If you see any of the following listed select the name in the list and click Remove Selected Filter and then click Ok:
    • Afc
    • ASAPIW2k
    • DLACDBHM
    • InCDPass
    • incdrm

  4. Please reboot your computer after removing any filters.
Try copying the DVD again after the above. If you are still encountering slow burn times please contact technical support.

Very slow, 24 hours to complete task

Hey! The conversion speed depends on the length of your dvd and the system environment of your PC. I have no idea of what kind of converter you are using, I use this DVD Ripper which is fast. You can have a free try of it. Hope that will be of help.

Are you using a Rewritable CD? When they're new, they're really fast, and they slow down the more you use them.

Writing to DVD takes excessive amount of time

The problem is that you might not have sufficient memory. Try burning @ 8x. Burning DVDs at 16x is a speed higher than the speed @ which file transfer takes place within the pc. So the lack of availability of memory slows down the proces. I once had the same problem.

I hope u find it helpful sir...

DVD - Slow burning speeds

Unlikely that there is a problem with the drive itself, most likely cause is software settings - which burning software are you using? if it is nero 6 then once you click burn after arranging the files for burning, the burn info page should pop up. click on the burn tab and make sure that "determine maximum speed" is checked and that write speed is set to maximum. hopefully this should solve it, if not try setting write speed to one of the slower settings listed and see if you get a better result. Sometimes dvd drives can slow right down when you are trying to push them to go at maximum. if you want to check what it should be able to do, try http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/87363/sony-dru820a.html also worth trying is updating the drivers http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/FIRMWARE/Sony/Sony-DRU-820A-10b.shtml to make sure you have the most recent version. Another thing worth trying if you haven't already is try a different brand or type of disc - just occasionally there can be clashes with certain types and burners - if this seems to solve it, don't throw your pack of discs away, give them to someone with a different burner. The final possibility is a power supply problem. If your PC's power supply unit has spare connectors for a drive then try a different one - possibly your supply doesn't have enough guts to run a more modern drive - take the drive out and try it in another pc with a higher power supply wattage rating. Hope this helps :)
